Hardly a major problem; A fitter should be able to sort that out in a couple of hours.

Just wondering ! There seems to be no provision on the Trust's website to enable one-off or irregular donations without having to contact the Trust or fill in paper applications. Wouldn't a Paypal or similar donation page be useful ?

The best way to assist the project financially as a non-member is to contact the 82045s Fund Secretary, Chris Proudfoot, or simply send a cheque, payable to 'The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust' to the address below. Also on the web-site.

I am sure Chris will have read the above comment and possibly respond when the system is up and running again.

A what book? Some of us don’t carry cash anymore, and as for cheques .

And cheques would then need an envelope and a stamp? Again, we no longer stock these items Chez Sheff.

The only means of payment we (and many others I suspect, particularly in these COVID times) have is electronic. Ie Phone, PayPal or BACS. Don’t even carry my credit card these days (mind you I’m royally stuffed if my phone dies).

Organisations really need to get to grips with these changing times, or risk alienating younger supporters like me

My earlier reply was intended to be helpful and simply answer the previous question. It was certainly not designed or intended to alienate younger potential supporters.

There are several ways to make donations if anybody really wants to. Bank Account # is on the 80245 Web-Page. Phone contact to the Trusts Hon. Treasurer, my previous post, will enable any potential donors to obtain one of the Trusts several other specific account numbers eg Boiler Fund, Future Fund etc. Payment to the desired account through internet bank transfer, bank transfer, BACS or a debit card. I don't have any say in the Trusts Management. I am just the messenger trying to post updates and in this case answer a simple question. There are always ways of improving any system - none is perfect, but the present system does work well as illustrated by the considerable sums already raised. More always welcome.

It should also be remembered that the fund raising and construction of 82045 is being done by Trust members and supporters on an unpaid, voluntary basis - not by a large commercial organization.

So far they have done a magnificent job.

Thank you for your response. The bank account number was not obvious, nor is one clearly invited to donate using it.
As Sheff has rightly observed many of us no longer use cheque books, and I really can't remember the last time I posted anything by mail ! My point was that using a internationally established system such as Paypal (there are others, some of them free for charities ) enables the easy transfer of funds without requiring phone calls, correspondence, mail handling or physical banking all of which take up the time of the very people you remind us are unpaid volunteers. When fund-raising it pays to remember the motto "KISS" - Keep It Simple, Stupid" : the simpler the system to use the more money you will get in!

Loco became a 2-6-2 at last on Monday 6th December. Well done to all concerned. I was working and couldn't get to Bridgnorth, but I understand that the exercise went off pretty well faultlessly.

Meanwhile, work is well under way on the boiler/firebox, side tanks ready for trial mounting though no date has been fixed for this to happen. Onward and upwards - and please keep everything crossed for a first steaming in the latter half of 2023!

Thanks for the nice comment, 30854, and all the best for 2022.

Re a 77XXX, one of these would be eminently feasible. The only real difference between them and the Class 3 tanks is the length of the frames (and a tender, of course!), and any group wanting to bite the bullet and build one would be able to benefit from our collective experience with 82045. I'd be prepared to try and raise the necessary ££, but my engineering nous is zilch so it would need a good team to be assembled: engineering, fundraising/financial planning, publicity should do it.

Plus a good base to work from. I don't think we'd have got very far without the backing of the Severn Valley Railway, and we owe David Williams a great vote of thanks for persuading the SVR Board to loan us a site at Bridgnorth, way back in the early days when a lot of folks were - to put it politely - sceptical about 82045 and snotty towards Tony Massau and myself.

Chris, and wheel patterns? If I remember correctly the Trust discovered the 77000 wheel donated by the City of Stoke on Trent Council had 16 spokes, whereas the Standard class 3MT tank had 17?

Hi Patrick - The S-O-T wheelset was from 76080, which was very sadly scrapped at Woodham's in the 1980's. Good point, though.

If I can find a decent pic of a 77XXX, I will try to count the number of spokes! I think it will also be 17, as both classes were built at Swindon, so our stored pattern should be OK for any future project. The SDR cast and machined the wheels and assembled the wheelsets. Axles and tyres came from SA.

By the way, if anyone wants a pair of 5'3" centre drivers for a 76XXX, please get in touch. Condition unknown, never nd tested once we found they weren't right for 82045.

Looking at some photos in RCTS book, you appear to be correct - 16 spokes for 76xxx but 17 spokes for 77xxx. Very strange!
