That pendulum lever is an elegant solution but it does mean that the valve rod end is unsupported and, I was told by a fitter years ago, that keeping that end gland steam tight was a bit of a problem. He said that he would much prefer to have had slide bars for support. Was this just a "One - off" comment?

I think the issue might be less to do with support, and more than on a Bulleid, the valves are outside admission, i.e. the gland is on the high-pressure (inlet) side, not the low pressure (exhaust) side. The Maunsell Q has the same issue.

That is a neat and very well designed solution, thanks for the picture.

A further point point is that the valve guide arrangement parents any vertical forces from the radius rod and combination lever being transmitted to the valve spindle. The pendulum lever arrangement absorbs those forces so the vertical load on the valve spindle must be quite small.

Has there been any movement of Manston? I believe it was due to go to Herston in early December?

Logical as West Coast needs an air brake loco to operate the train. Whilst they are a vacuum steam company their business head will tell them that they need air as an alternative.

Be interesting to see if they send her out with full Golden Arrow regalia for some of these trains,

That's a bit unoriginal these days don't you think. However a Bulleid 1950s style Northern Belle headboard would be good in my opinion.

Are the 'originals' allowed on the line to Fort William and Mallaig?

Could be. They are the same gauge envelope as LMS class 5s.

I have no idea. They may well fit, but you can imagine the adhesion problems they may well encounter if you were to try it.

They may be but are totally unsuitable. The Mallaig road knocks hell out of any engine. The oil bath welded to the frames might spring a few leaks and the climb up the Glenfinnan Summit eastbound would be interesting
