Even then would you want to be the first one up on the tender to test if it really was off?

I was a passenger on the morning trip and for me, a run at the bank is way better than stopping for a banker!

From the front coach, the roar of sustained acceleration from Stoke Works Junction to Bromsgrove followed by the climb of the Lickey was quite electrifying. The folk on the platform at Bromsgrove had a real treat!

It was all jolly good fun, so many thanks to all at Vintage Trains, and to Network Rail for keeping lesser trains out of our way.

If I can make a flippant suggestion to Vintage Trains, in a few years time after 5043 is back in action, how about a similar day with double-headed Castles and a decent load of 10 or 11, with the morning trip charging the bank unassisted, and the afternoon trip stopping at Bromsgrove for banking assistance from a suitable pannier tank? Just don't ask me how the consist would be reversed at Tyseley for the second trip!

No barriers and thankfully Bromsgrove is Jobsworth free, otherwise it could of been difficult obtaining the shot of the Duchess.

On the last point, while not quite the same didn’t VT do a double header with 5043 & 4965 as you describe? Hopefully they can do something like that again.

My efforts from the field above Vigo. Shame the moon was obscured just before the Duchess came past! Many thanks to all who helped to make these trains happen.

Both seem to occur in areas of very limited clearance i.e bridges . Interesting seeing 25kv applied to coal and instant combustion

That would be expected - limited space causing an ark, the power then takes the quickest path to ground.

Clearly 6233 was gauged for the route so are the wires too low or has the tender been over coaled and therefore out of gauge. If the latter whose responsibility is it to ensure the tender is properly loaded and trimmed and who would be liable if these bangs and flashes caused damage to infrastructure or - god forbid - injury to persons?

Is it for us to say who is responsible for such actions? If a misjudgement has occurred then let those in charge deal with it in private. <BJ>

Not asking which person, just which body - VT as the TOC? Because part of me thinks highlighting that it happened to the whole world via the various clips on here probably isn’t the wisest move…..

So why are you continuing to highlight this by asking such questions? I am sure that the relevant powers have the matter in hand.

I think it is very safe to say "the whole world" is not seeing it from clips posted on this little forum....

....now the whole world might be seeing it from all the clips that are circulating, getting shared and gaining lots comments on Facebook as multiple people forward them on and reshare, but this forum - no, I think that has a rather limited audience by comparison to wider social media.

I do wonder if there is potential for a regular run like this? The Shakespeare is obviously the bread/butter, but a once a month or so Saturday programme that sees two unassisted climbs up the Lickey might be tempting. I did want to do this but just too many railway weekends in the diary leading up to Xmas that we had to give this one a miss. Hopefully we don't have to wait another 15+ years for the next unassisted trip.

Once a month seems altogether too hopeful, but perhaps once a year?

Notwithstanding any implications, if a tender is potentially stacked out-of-gauge, who is responsible for checking it before going out on the railway?
