Locomotives that should have been preserved, but weren’t.

Which locomotives do you all feel should have been preserved?

 

Recently we've had Locos that didn't even qualify as a 'might have been', but really deserved preservation, Locomotives that NEARLY made it, and Your top ten steam classes for anyone in doubt of the @LMS2968 rule that there are infinite ways of asking it, but it all boils down to the same question of "What is your favourite locomotive"

 

Watch out for a list of LNER big stuff incoming!

 

Sort of, but my own 'near misses' list doesn't match my 'Euromillions' list and a couple to which I'm very partial appear on neither!

 

No.1 Linden, which survived 100 years and was scrapped in 1966

 

Can I get it over and done with early and say “The Leader”

Would look great somewhere like Severn Valley, Glos Warks, East Lancs, North Yorkshire Moors.

If you feel you really must, Tom ....... just for the record, I was thinking in terms the GNRI 0-6-0s. Couldn't decide between Classes SG, SG2 and UG. Any one of 'em would've been a star turn on RPSI mainline workings. Ho-hum.

 

The GER also had an 0-10-0 tank which was an experiment

 

Well, at least one of the powered bogies would have been nice.

Just to be a bit different I’ll say this

 

The Irish version was a little bit better than the Leader, it didn't have sleeve valves and did actually do a bit of work on a few freight turns, as far as I know

I've heard that Bertha was withdrawn because the second coupled axle journals were down to scrapping size. This axle was also cranked to clear the inside connecting rods, and a spare one had been made, but never fitted.

a couple of years before the engine was withdrawn, a clear out in the stores at Derby turned up this unused part, and it was binned.

If it hadn't been, the repair costs for overhaul would have been within budget so it would have been kept on, but the cost of forging another one tipped it over.

 

I have to agree, nothing spectacular, just a distinctive maid of all work. I'll now start the livery sub debate by saying that the colour photos of them in the UTA livery with red and straw lining looked very smart.

Though I do agree another 1 or 2 2251's wouldn't be bad either.
