It may be boring stuff but we're putting a lot of effort into getting our Goods Inwards system working properly. Purchase orders and goods inwards draft forms are raised through our web site system. We then record the signed off goods inwards form and all associated certification in the database and link it to the relevant components. This means we can quickly identify any documentation for a component. More importantly it means we don't pay the bill until we're 100% happy!

Meanwhile the bogie assembly trial fits are progressing well. The centre slide took about 3 return visits to the machine shop before we had the right clearance. Better to take off too little than too much! Here's John with his set of trusty feeler gauges checking for the right clearance. Soon we will be stripping down the bogie frame in preparation for assembly. First job will be to weld the spring caps into the stretcher arms and to weld the grease nipple carrier plate onto the ends of the stretcher arms. Then we will turn the stretcher upside down to fit the frame plates - gravity will assist in getting a tight fit with the stretcher

It is not boring at all Ian, it is reassuring to know that checks and inspections are being carried out at the right times to ensure that all is right with the job and the paperwork is available to satisfy any future inspection. Better to spend 15% extra time/money to make sure all is well than 120% later on stripping down and rebuilding, with sympathy and acknowledgement to those who have also made that mistake in the past.

Oh no it isn't! One need not look too far to see what happens when such unsung activities are overlooked. Superb update and your efforts are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

(See Latest News) It is good to see the younger generation experiencing what a large engineering company can turn its hand to given the managements enthusiasm, and a committed project team of workers.
Even better when they are from one of my local colleges!

Following on from the top of page posting, it seems that before the re-assembly of the bogie, the team have checked their paperwork and found a gap in the paperwork for the plates. Incredibly, the Latest News item tells us that new plates are being sourced. It seems amazing that the work got so far before that was realized but this team found a problem, discussed and considered the various options and took the hard decision to remake with all the necessary checks and paperwork. It just shows that even so far down the line, if hard decisions need to be taken to ensure as perfect a finished article (locomotive), they will be taken and we can all sleep soundly in our beds at night.
A big thanks to the kind sponsor, and our strict regime of paperwork!

Well, just received the latest Newsletter today.
'Clan News' and 'Clan Project' are no more!!!!!

The decision has been taken to re-brand the Hengist project to:-

'Hengist Herald' and '72010 Hengist' respectively.

At least this might stop all this confusion with a certain Southern Pacific locomotive!
Even with the re-branding the Newsletter is still a good and interesting read, including an up-to 50% membership fee offer.

    Hi John,
I hope you like the rebranded magazine. A lot of time and effort went into getting it just right, some by myself and some by Rodger who I think you met at the AGM. The one thing we did not want to change was the content - that had to be at least as good as it always was. It has taken rather longer than was planned to get everything to the standard we wanted which is why it's a week or so later being published than it normally is. We all think the wait was worth it, and I hope you agree.

Given the historic examples of 'Clans' expected to perform on 'Britannia' turns, it's probably just as well, or we could land up with someone getting 72010 confused with 35028 and hooking up an 8P load behind the tender.

Very impressed with my copy of the magazine which arrived in the post yesterday. Excellent job all round.
The images of the rebranded items in the centre spread were also very good.

I think it might need one somewhere for all the electricals required nowadays!

The advice we've received is that batteries will suffice for today's environment. However, with the introduction of ETCS cab signalling some form of power supply will be required. An Axle driven alternator like Tornado is a likely solution. Hopefully the electronics will reduce in size and power consumption as ETCS gets rolled out. We are planning that we will have to accommodate ETCS and more space in the tender is being evaluated
