There was discussion previously that there was something about image rights that meant Scotsman wasn’t in the adverts all the time.

Their expertise with Gresley Pacifics was also on show in their work to keep 60009 running over the last couple of years.

AFAIK Scotsman is running with A3 boiler 27020. As has already been mentioned it carried A3 boiler 27058 from 1962-1977 and A4 boiler 27971 from 1978-2005.

    thanks Sam,
that's interesting because records show that boiler 27020 was fitted to 60041 Salmon Trout on 23/3/1961 and this was replaced with 27024 on 27/1/1963 until withdrawal. Contrary to my earlier post, 60041 was withdrawn from St Margaret's on 4/12/1965
Does this mean that 60041's boiler was made 'spare' to 60103 in January 1963? 60103 is shown gaining boiler 27058 on 2/6/1962 per my earlier post and per your post.

That would mean it had carried three boilers in preservation whereas I believe it is only two. I don't know the boiler numbers but have always thought the A3 boiler carried from 1962-1977 was also the one rebuilt and refitted after 2005; and the A4 boiler sold to Jeremy Hosking.

It was my understanding when I was a lad back in the mid-60s that Salmon Trout's boiler was being kept as a spare for 4472 after the withdrawal of 60041. That's the story that was going the rounds then.

I'm sure I have read somewhere that the boiler on 60103 when Pegler acquired it was taken off and scrapped in about 1966 (?) and the one from 60041 was fitted at that time. The A4 boiler was purchased at about the same time as a spare. But I don't have my books to hand at the moment so I can't check on it

I always thought that way back in 1993 it was Salmon Trouts double chimney that was fitted when Sir Bill changed its appearance at Babcocks in Oldbury? Something rings a bell about a spare pair of cylinders from 60041 as well?

My original posting on this thread was based on whether 60103 inherited a 'kit of spares' from 60041 (including a set of cylinders) at the point 60041 was withdrawn in 1965 and from what I've gleaned, that cannot have been the case since the boiler 27020 was removed from 60041 in 1963. This then beggars the question of whether the spares for FS were all acquired at this time and 60041 ran for another two years with other parts? Or, could all the parts have been sold together to Peglar in 1963 or over a period of time between 1963 & 1966?

I'm getting 'Thoughts' of the double chimney being from 'Salmon Trout' but aquired around the time of the Waterman/McAlpine rebuild from a garden in (I think) Hampshire. I also remember 'Something' about a spare cylinder, but when and where from, Your guess is as good as mine.

The chimney was in Ron’s garden:

When I were a sprog, knee high to a grasshopper, there was a marvellous 2nd hand tool/junk shop in Hythe (Kent), wherein for sale, was one of the straight brass nameplates, originally fitted to RH&D No.5, Hercules. Unfortunately, at £7 10/-, it was way way way beyond my paltry means and (for some unfathomable reason) my father didn't feel inclined to part with a week's family food budget, when he had more scrap brass than that in the garage, scattered across dozens of used 2oz 'Capastan Ready Rubbed' baccy tins. :(

I think they must have run out of other advertisements as we now have two outside the station.

I was sort of right then, as to which and where, it was just the when that was wrong, which begs the question, which double chimney did Waterman/McAlpine use?

I reckon Ron’s. The Portsmouth news report is vague about the dates and says Ron was approached by FS’s ‘Chief Engineer’ (who they misleadingly named as Tony Marchington) who was looking to replace the single chimney which had been put on the loco for ‘some reason’. I’d suggest to actually’ve been Roland Kennington before the double was fitted during the McAlpine era. Blame a sloppy journalist, not Ron.

I should be able to check the relevant issue of Steam Railway from 1993 when I visit my parents this weekend...

It was the use of Tony Marchingtons name that threw Me, just strange that a Journalist would go to the trouble of 'Researching' only to be wrong.

I have long suspected that journalists are carefully trained to get at least one fact wrong in every article.
