No, they all had round-top boxes; obviously the barrel was longer.

Why? When there is an original 2-8-0 restored already, and the 2-10-0 is a better looking engine anyway...?

Duh - you are right. Knew there was a fundamental difference in the fireboxes - just not at the top!

You could not turn a 2-8-0 into a 2-10-0 without making almost a new engine, different firebox ,2-8-0 narrow box, , 2-10-0 wide box, different frames , i think most other bits are simular, the 2-8-0 was based on the stanier 8f i believe, the WD 2-10-0 was an all new design, as far as i can tell.
it would be cheaper to buy an ex greek loco , the Wd 2-10-0 are not bad riders , and have a low axle weight, i used to prefer it to the S160 ,the ride on that was awefull .

The WD 2-8-0 was dimensionally like a Stanier but with manufacturing simplifications to speed production and save on scarce materials. The 2-10-0 was a development of it and Riddles kept as many parts as possible the same. The objective was not to produce a more powerful locomotive but one of the same power with a lower axleload. One more axle meant a longer frame, which would have looked odd with the shorter boiler, so a longer boiler with a wide firebox ledged between the fourth and fifth driving axles was used.

Like the later Riddles 9Fs, the long rigid wheeelbase necessitated flangeless centre driving wheels and this feature would disqualify it from working on NR lines today. I've often wondered if derogation could be obtained to work the NYMR 2-10-0 to Whitby. Are there really any new-specification check rails on this section?

As far as I'm aware there are none of the new spec checkrails on the Esk Valley line, and I've heard that the owmners of 92214 would like to be able to run that engine to both Whitby and Battersby. If they are successful in getting a derogation then there is probably no reason why the WD should not follow in due course, although it is well down the restoration queue at the moment and so likely to be out of action for many years to come. When it is running again, though, the question has to be whether it is desirable to run it to Whitby on a regular basis. The curves on the approach to Whitby are sharpr than any on the NYMR, and it is said that 3672's chassis is mechanically very tired from its spell in traffic on the NYMR. Its 8-wheel tender may not be ideal from this point of view either.

Also, there were problems with 60007 going to Whitby, with its long wheelbase spreading the curves, was it? Whatever the issue, she rarely goes there. Surely a WD with 10 coupled wheelbase will be even more rigid?

I don't know where this idea of 60007 spreading the curves has come from.

The 2-10-0s were designed to go round sharp corners, the A4s were not.

    Massive thread resurrection.

Just wondering if any more is known about these locos, and indeed whether they still even exist?!

There appears to be one still at Tithorea depot, WD 73659 looking at other images online. Several other locos visible on Google Earth too, at least one USA tank and an S160. No idea how up to date the image is though.

Don't confuse a wide firebox with a Wootton!

I can't give a update ,but I can say what I saw and photo'ed at Thessaloniki in May 1980. I arrived by bus in Thessaloniki and made my way to the station.I had no idea where the loco shed was .I had a permit to visit the depot, so I shown this to a driver of a large American type diesel that looked like it was going somewhere light. He spoke english and invited me to join him in thr cab for a lift to the loco shed.On arrival I made my way to the office. They had been notified of my visit and I was allowed to walk arround on my own..The steam engines were dumped in the shed sidings ,on several roads ,rusty but not in a bad shape overall. The difficulty was a lot had no numbers on them ,although I managed to ID most of the WD 2-10-0 s .Other loco's present were S160s, maybee 7 or 8,the masive Breda /Ansalao 2-10-2 s ,5 or6. Serveral USATC 0-6-0Ts were still kept for steam cleaning duties.. The shed staff had arranged a taxi for me to visit another dump someway from the loco'shed. This was full up with very rusty German /Prussian type locos, similar looking to the G7 S or P8s.It was impossble to make a detail note of the loco's or a get a accurate number of loco's in the yard .Thistles had grown up to 7or 8 foot high ,along with trees etc. Two photo,s of WD 2-10-0 , 960 now in the UK, and 964 attached. If any one is interested in any other loco's photoed on my visit, they can be found ,on my FLIKR site ,in a album called,Turkey /Greek Steam and Diesel loco's. www.flickr.com/photos/5611hongkong

    Great photos, thanks.
Those Alco diesels were some good looking machines too.
