At least this thread keeps unrest, bad feelings and unrest at other railways out of the lime light

I wonder if the board room at WSR Plc, is like the kremlin, where clearly scared devotees tell the one in the big chair, what he wants to hear, and they get banished to the remote outposts of his empire should they displease him,;)

I’d hope so, it would be a very informative read. Try as I might I still don’t understand the viewpoint of one side.

Not sure that really strengthens the arguments or credibility of the current board's detractors ...

Sometimes I do have to wonder what does happen during board meetings. I wonder if everyone really agrees with the actions taken and if there are any alternative viewpoints, robust discussions or challenges to proposals? A good board will consist of a fair range of opinions and viewpoints where items can be openly discussed, challenged, supported and debated and the best consensus arrived at. I to do wonder sometimes if this is actually happening at the WSR given that so many of the directors have played the musical chairs game and seem to be on (almost) 'best mates' terms. Would a truly non partisan director really have put up with what has been happening, having to grin and bear actions they disagree with because of corporate responsibility? Personally, if that had been me, I'd have walked ages ago - and not gone quietly either.

A good friend of mine , young, educated but with a railway and heritage brain joined one railway board and was over a fairly short period of time was made to feel utterly unwelcome by the established members and resigned . They went on to join another railway , board member and the factional politics meant he stepped down . their skills are now deployed in the non railway world . Neither of the above were the WSR but perhaps illustrates a broader challenge that unless you fit and play the political party line you are on a one way ticket out

Sadly, I think that is the true of most (non-railway) Boards I have dealt with - you know that you have to play by their rules when you join. Otherwise you end up falling out and end up leaving, either of your own accord or the organisation forces you out.

Having people in key positions on a heritage railway who want to celebrate/commemorate the past but are also living in the past are exactly not the people you want.

Getting the mix of heritage with 21st Century thinking is the trick. The first 'Thomas' event on a heritage railway was probably scorned, but not any more. However you do have to take your supporters with you whilst communicating. explaining and recognising that you will not be able to please everybody.

So let's see whether the WSR 2022 season can achieve what almost every other heritage railway seems able to do but also seems to elude the WSR.

    Dean Forest ?

They've always seemed like a competent railway to me, but then again I've not visited for some time or am I a member.

Parkend SB should demonstrate the ability of the railway to see through a job to a very high standard, and have an element of future proofing.

Just to clear, the point I was making was simply they had received funding and ran appeals. No question of competence or ability.

I’m not on about the DFR, It’s somewhere I’d like to visit unlike the WSR btw.
