Never normally an issue? Two things wrong on the same day? I thought about booking on this for my first main line trip of 2022 . Very glad I didn’t. Bad luck or what?

I guess it's normal practice (FTR etc) to check battery capacity and resilience before each outing for obvious reasons so today was indeed bad luck. But good that it was possible to source replacement from not too far away.

I went on the CME today from Crewe to Carlisle and return, run was fine to Carnforth then chaos ensued, rear coach would not respond to Vacuum brakes of 46115
So Class 86 had to attach to rear of train and we left 45 minutes late 86 and shoved us all the way to Carlisle, topping 78mph over Shap for a 25 minute late arrival
    Even 4498 SNG arrived late
Return was supposed to be 14:22, but 95 minutes later we left due to AWS batteries failure, new ones were found somewhere!!
Anyway just a few phone pics and phone videos for tonight rest of camera photo tomorrow

"The Plan" - See SG at Wilpshire followed by a leisurely drive to Leyland to see SNG heading south, had to change at best it had to be one or t'other. I decided on Wilpshire and SG (and hoped that no further ills befell the train). Running very late it was impossible for the CME to make up sufficient time to leave Clitheroe before the 18.25 Rochdale departure but there was a good chance for it to follow and run before the 19.10. A brisk run from Hellifield to Clitheroe would do the trick and result in the train passing through R&W at around 19.00.

When I arrived, I had my pick of locations and decided on the Blackburn end of the Clitheroe platform. The service trains crossed in the platforms, dropped off and picked up passengers and went on their way. Now for a (hopefully) short wait. RTT confirmed that the CME had indeed made "the slot", leaving Clitheroe at 18.39 and due at R&W around 19.00 - a bit of good news! A few minutes before 7 pm there was a sudden roar from the direction of Wilpshire Tunnel, it quickly grew louder and SG appeared, exhaust blasting skywards and making a wonderful sound. As the loco got ever nearer the noise rose to a crescendo, she crashed past, fireman leaning on the window, a feather at the safety valves a testament to his skill and hard work. Then she was away under the road bridge and off to the summit followed by 12 coaches (and no diesel). The number of people watching this splendid spectacle was in single figures. 97L and 28 mph.

A shame for the passengers, who suffered a major disappointment on the outbound leg and then a big delay - but at least they got a return run behind the Scot that sounded in fine fettle. I wish them luck with their ongoing journeys. For Oswald it was a day of one location and two trains; the first was long awaited and the second one was a long wait (or it would have been without RTT).

(Apologies again for the sound distortion. I've been experimenting with recording levels; SG was very, very loud and close - I need to reduce the levels further.)

That climb of Wilpshire looked to be a pretty good one. Late or not, the Scot sounded good.

It was looking like a no show for 46115 but while out chasing the A4 we just managed to get a shot of the CME at Kirkby Stephen:

One clip of 'Scots Guardsman' yesterday exiting Wilpshire Tunnel with the return trip. It's attached to the video of 4498 - fast forward to 3:40 for 46115 :)

I see that Les Ross managed to recover some 39 minutes on the run from Preston down to Euston.

It's an easy path - ten minutes at Crewe, fifteen at Milton Keynes - but it clearly also hurried along.
