Only nearly always ... Back when this 'ere thread kicked off, someone did suggest the proposed tank valiant of the Bulleid Q1. Can't quite recall if we'd established the likely wheel arrangement.

A while ahead of grouping, there was a proposal for a 2-6-2T version of the LBSCR K Class mogul, but since the drawings for that have gone walkabout ...... :(

Beyer Peacock proposed a 2-4-2T for IOM in 1945.
Idea was to go unwatered from Douglas to Ramsey.
Ramsey line is closed but let us play they had made it up to post Chapelon thermo efficiency and also proposed a 2-4-0T for the southern line.
Very long use guaranteed on an island where the idea of destructive climate disaster do not sell well.

I meant it wouldn’t be going mainline.

You could add the Holden F5 and the GCR 4-4-0 to that, but against it there is the NER G5, to which the LNWR 4-4-0 can be added and from the past there are the A1, P2, County, Grange, Saint, Patriot, B17, 47XX, Clan. I know that some of these have abandoned main line aspirations now but they started out with them, it's just that reality has struck some!

Are they intending to go main line with the NER G5? I knew that the LNWR George is, which I don't think is a good idea, they were class 3 and I can't see it getting much main line work, even though they did pull some heavy loads in LNWR and LMS days

I think /very/ early literature talked of the G5 going mainline but I haven't come across mention of it lately. ETA: The more the marbles move in my brain, the more I think it was reference to being built to MT275 more than a commitment to mainline.

I suspect, however, that they would have used rather more coal and water than a Class 5 doing the same work.

Not exactly a steam loco ...... well, actually definitely not a steam loco but it was British Railways related, was a proposal and hasn't be built so far. You're not going to believe this.

This refers to British Railways UK Patent Application No. 59083/70 and this is about the least illogical thread to bung it on. You're really not going to believe this ....

Told you you wouldn't believe it.

I know large companies sometimes encourage their employees to work on various speculative projects in case a really innovative idea emerges, providing any patent goes to the company, but you do get the sense that the boss was displaying a spectacular lack of oversight of just precisely what his team was up to!

The allegedly NER sketched up 2-8-4T for the Sand Hitton Light Railway would have been a bit of a beast, like a B16 with tanks on steroids.
