I see that it was the Appleby Horse Fair on the 9th so anyone out watching tomorrow's train might want to allow extra time just in case our "Traveller friends(?)" are blocking the highway with their "hosses and vans" - I seem to remember that last year someone!? had a bit of a problem. If it happens again, Ian here is some soothing music chosen just for you . . .

The Pendle Dalesman (14 June) is one of the many steam hauled trains that are scheduled to run south over the S&C this year The climb from Ormside (MP275) to Aisgill summit (MP259.75) over the so-called “Blue Riband” section continues to be of particular interest.

This year I have been keeping a record of all posted times and will at the end of the year post a complete list. As this is JUST FOR FUN there are no exclusions, just so long as there is steam on the front.

It doesn't matter how many coaches there were (I will include the number in the post),

It doesn’t matter if it stopped at Appleby, or not (I will include this in the post),

It doesn’t matter even if there was a diesel present (I will include this in the post).

I need your help. If you are travelling on the train and are able to record a time please do so and then post it on this thread.

If you don't feel confident to spot MP275 (whilst rushing past at 50-60 mph) or are seated on the non-milepost side of the train, then simply post a time from the south end of Ormside Viaduct to Ais Gill Summit Board. (Please make it clear if your time is taken from the viaduct and I will adjust the viaduct times) - purists remember, it's JUST FOR FUN.

If you are travelling, all you need is a view from a window. (The southern end of the parapet wall of Ormside Viaduct and Aisgill Summit Board are clearly visible from both sides of the train). And a stopwatch or the stopwatch on your wristwatch or the stopwatch on your mobile phone.

The more times the better so get timing, you know you want to!

[If you record a full log (north or south) please contact @iancawthorne for possible inclusion on his excellent website (settlecarlislesteam.co.uk)]

    Thanks in anticipation

I gave myself plenty of time to get to Chapel lane at Hoghton. On my previous journey there had been an accident on the M65 and I arrived with only a couple of minutes to spare, this time I arrived 30 minutes before the train was due. I was the sole occupant of the bridge and there were only two photographers down by the foot crossing.

@RalphW sent me a text to say that they had left Preston; there was a poor internet signal and RTT updates were hard won. Eventually RTT updated and showed that the train had left Bamber Bridge (1L). The sky remained bright, cloudy and with no sun; 13C but it felt cool in the very gentle southerly breeze. It was surprisingly quiet, the usual roar from the traffic on the M65 was absent. A distant whistle, then another and another coming in rapid succession - it sounded as though BIL was motoring. Time to switch on the camera just as a lady came walking along with her dog; she wanted to chat, I gestured at the microphone and held my finger to my lips. Yet still she chatted, I repeated the gestures and the penny dropped.

BIL was making all the right sort of sounds as she burst under the occupation bridge and hurried onwards. A lovely whistle for the foot crossing then, in a cloud of steam she was off under the bridge and the last few yards to the summit - was this really 1/100r? Then the most important event of the day (so far), from a droplight at rear of the next to last coach a wave from @RalphW. Thanks. Big loco, 10 coaches, willing crew, 44/5 mph and 1E - cracking stuff!

On the journey home it became apparent why there had been no roar from the traffic on the M65, the westbound traffic was at a standstill whilst a broken down vehicle was moved to the hard shoulder. I returned home to find that Diego, a neighbour's cat, was curled up asleep on MY chair.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one to suffer traffic problems. Intending to photograph at Bamber Bridge footpath, the traffic in Lostock Hall was so heavy that a change of location resulted in this.

Not quite what I set out for but seeing 35018 get into its stride was worth seeing / hearing.

As we are told, "the sun shines on the righteous" so just to be on the safe side Mrs W came along with me to Ramsgreave & Wilpshire station. She stayed up on the road bridge where the sun continued to shine; old Oswald descended to the dim, dark recesses of the platform.

Earlier, the train had been running very early and I had been concerned that, with a long booked stop at Hellifield, it may try to slip through on an earlier slot, perhaps an hour earlier. This proved to be unfounded (possibly the needs of the diners?) and the train departed Hellifield at its appointed time (leaving Oswald to enjoy the conclusion of a splendid Test Match victory). My other concern was being "bowled" by the Clitheroe bound service train which was due to stop in the station at 19.39 whilst BIL was due through at 19.43 (and likely to be early). The service train stopped RT and many of those waiting on the platform (to watch BIL) did a quick shuffle up to MY end of the platform, the unit departed, most of the watchers shuffled back (but not allof them) and only one minute later BIL came into view.

A good crisp exhaust beat, a nice blue/grey haze above the chimney and a healthy feather at the safety valves. The exhaust grew louder, the watchers fidgeted and chattered, BIL powered effortlessly through the platforms, @RalphW, at the leading droplight in the second coach, waved, his hair blowing in the turbulent air as the carriage swept imperiously by. The train hurried off under the road bridge and up and over the summit. A lovely end to proceedings on what had become a pleasant sunny evening, 16C and very little breeze. BIL was working well within her comfort zone 31 mph (probably from a 20 mph psr (or tsr?) across Whalley Arches) and 2E. Thanks to @RalphW for the wave - more waves than Newquay beach - and for the updates.

When we arrived home Diego was waiting at the front door (to come in - which he did!)

Reported from a friend onboard a Blue Riband time of 17:22 (note, recorded to Milepost 260). Great stuff. :)

I spend ages persuading the fingers of my right hand to stay in the Vulcan salute, only to find you can't see it in the video.:(

Sorry, I did try to save a frame from my video but it lacks sufficient clarity, perhaps if I had one of those super duper video cameras, mmm . . . ? Anyway, "Live long and prosper."
