Thanks for this view, however the Windsor DMU trains, even every 20 mins, seemed full, so if the say 4 trains a day Wareham to Corfe or Swanage could also get passengers near this number might help?

DcB above has put the case succintly,so when the trials take place one hopes that they do so with the full support of all SRT members no matter what side of this debate that they are on. If, as a supporter of the initiative I have backed a losing horse (or DMU) I am sure that it will not deter my 40yrs plus support of the Swanage Railway. I might even stand in the Birds Nest Redux and say so!

I think this thread should be renamed Oliversbest Project for Wareham, let him make all the posts with everyone else totalling ignoring him because the back and forth has gone on long enough. The Wareham services will happen when everything is in place and the time is right. From now on I will no longer read any posts on this thread.

I have him on Ignore, so all I see are umpteen posts arguing against him, apparently in vain. Why continue to feed the troll?

I must say there is a village somewhere in Dorset missing it’s idiot…
Mods could we maybe consider locking this thread for a while? It’s not painting anyone in a positive light, plus there doesn’t seem to anything to report regarding Wareham at the moment

    Thread under discussion by moderators.

In the meantime, of course, the thread can easily become redundant by people not bothering to comment...

Although I am in agreement, sadly I fear that our Eastern Canada correspondent will simply post his waffle on the Swanage Railway thread. Might it be better to restrict or even ban him?

Ban him for what? Not having the right view? Not having the same view as you? Being able to survive multiple ad hominem attacks and come back cheerfully for more? Ban him for holding the railway’s feet to the fire? Ban him for asking awkward questions that are difficult to answer?

    Live and let live.

I'd suggest that the behaviour you describe is more like trolling, given the refusal to engage with reasonable questions.

    Minor problem called tides!
The harbours in Greece would seem to be very calm on most days of the year. The Mediterranean doesn't fluctuate too much with tides.
The tidal flow into/out of Poole Harbour is quite fast and that is why only a chain ferry can cross the harbour entrance relatively easily.
It still requires three hefty Cummins diesel engines.

Outside the holiday season when most Brits see it, the idea the Med is always calm doesn't come close to explaining over three millenia's worth of shipwrecks!

This thread has already featured evidence of commercial 'beach landings' along the South Coast ..... and why we don't see any today (the last significant one in Brighton was the 'Athena B' on 21st Jan 1980). Re: tidal currents, whilst the Channel certainly does have fiercer currents than the Med, that's not to say none exist there, plus down by Purbeck, I'd gently remind you that the chain ferry operates across the narrow mouth of Poole Harbour, which forms a tidal race (Stranford Lough over in Co.Down is probably the only more extreme example in these islands).

Bearing in mind the thread title and having made the journey by road many times, Poole to Swanage via the Chain Ferry or via Wareham is no fun on a quiet day and a nightmare otherwise. Just think 'Corfe Castle' or 'Studland' and all becomes clear.

I won't pretend that were a through link by rail operational it would take any less time but it might be a little less stressful. So it's sad that this arrangement isn't getting off the ground. It is a concrete example of a transport link helping to clear our roads but the obstacles remain, not to mention the accountant's spreadsheet.

It would have been very unfortunate that if the trial was being undertaken this year one of the potentially busiest weekends with the Roads to Rail event would have been totally impacted by the RMT strike.

If you think that the tidal race at Poole Harbour is strong, I suggest you have a ride on the Fairbourne Railway and watch the water flowing past Barmouth Harbour from Penrhyn Point! when the tide is flowing in or out! I think the differential between high and low tide approaches 20ft at its highest.
