The WD 2-8-0s and 2-10-0s had a similarly shaped regulator handle when originally built.

Barclay industrail engines were just the same as photo',the steam brake handle was was V shaped on top of the boiler ,could be worked from each side. The last paragraph was just the same as described,if a slip occured on main valve ,you had to shut the regulator completley ,and go to full small valve, if pulling hard, and then go on to main valve again if required. ,there was a small resistance between first and second valve so you knew when you was there.
Ivatt 4mt 2-6-0s had the pull out regulator both sides, I know a Kettering fireman who was knocked out when the driver opened up.
Even on the coldest winter evenings myself, and a friend used to meet to see the the 6.41pm Kettering to Toton leave ,it had to cross over from the back road, wrong side of the down main, to the down slow ,up at 1 in 125.I quote from my 1955 diary .October 28 .48763 15 full 27 ton Iron ore tipplers ,65 emtie coal wagons ,stuck ,(stalled )about half a mile away from the start.58214 sent to restart,(banker ).16 December 48102 10 full 27 toners,61 empties, similar event ,48050 assisted. This is just a couple of entries ,I have many more.
A road parralled the line and we followed ,not much more than walking pace.Mostly there would be a massive slip ,the only way of stopping this was for the driver to wind the loco into mid gear or there abouts , because there was so much steam passing through the regulator valve it was imposible even with to men hanging on the handle to shut off.The driving wheels tyres would be glowing red hot ,with sinders going high into the sky.The weight of the train would be pulling the loco, when slipping, back down the grade as well, very slowly. There was no picking up the peices and failing the engine ,once the banker was attacted ,a few crows on the whistle and right away.I've also seen this happen with 5X s,(Jubs ) the driver beeing very keen to get a fast start from Kettering station, going full regulator almost straight away, massive slip.

Not sure what you mean by this statement? Gresley used the double seat regulator on his A1/A3, A4 and V2 locos but this is a different regulator to the more conventional main and pilot valve regulator used on most locomotives and different from the multiple valve regulator fitted to Blue Peter.

Hi Steve, forgive me - I was working from memory - in the 40s the Thompson Pacifics were fitted with GCR pull out types. These were replaced by the Gresley type after. This is probably a better way of describing what I was taking about.

I’ve no idea what Blue Peters is like but I imagine with the multi valve setup it would be different.

    Apologies for the confusion.

I knew about some of it, but all the valve gear and slide bars was a bit of a surprise - I thought a lot of that was replaced in 1995?

A very comprehensive update and well worth the wait. Many thanks to LSL for taking the trouble to keep us posted. :)

I got away from FB while it was still possible. Every once in a while, the normally public pages seem to throw a woobler and insist on a log-in. The cynic in me suspects it's an underhanded ruse to entice the gullible into signing up! Try again in 24 hrs and it's likely to reappear with none of the sign-in nonsense.

It says the valve gear has been overhauled, not replaced-did you mix up a couple of the bullet points?

    [IMG][IMG] 60532 Blue Peter UPDATE [IMG][IMG]
Since LSG became active on Social Media, we have received many messages asking about the progress of Blue Peter's overhaul. With the assistance of our Engineering Department, we have written up a detailed update on this wonderful Locomotive and the works currently being carried out. For those interested, please read on!
LNER Peppercorn Class A2 No. 60532 Blue Peter is the sole survivor of 15 4-6-2 locomotives of the A2 class, designed by Arthur Peppercorn of the LNER. 60532 worked between 1948 and 1966. It is owned by the Royal Scot Locomotive and General Trust, currently under overhaul at our Crewe Depot.
Progress on an overhaul of this nature can appear to be quite slow due to the manufacture, repair, and machining of various small parts, that together make one larger component. Essentially, we are moving into the visual production stage where all of the fiddly little jobs to get a kit of parts together, suddenly get reassembled and voila! A locomotive begins to re appear….
Just some of the work that has been completed or ongoing, to ensure the safety and reliability of this locomotive for many years into the future is as follows:
[IMG] Horn guides have had the cracks repaired and have been fastened to the frames with fitted bolts made on our CNC lathe.
[IMG] The Frames have been aligned ready to fit axle boxes.
[IMG] All three cylinders are now mounted on the frames and secured with fitted bolts, again being made on our CNC lathe.
[IMG] All Valve and Cylinder liners have been renewed.
[IMG] The middle cylinder had significant cracking so it was replaced with a new casting.
[IMG] All of the valve gear has been overhauled. Including: New valve heads and spindles, valve crossheads metaled and machined to fit the aligned valve guides.
[IMG] Radius rods and expansion links ground and new die blocks manufactured.
[IMG] A new eccentric sheave was cast and machined due to the old one being beyond wear limits. Both the sheave and strap have been fitted to the axle.
[IMG] The original slide bars had significant wear and cracking so these have been replaced with new and aligned to the cylinders.
[IMG] The front bogie centre casting was beyond repair so a replacement has been cast and is currently being machined. All of the smaller components have been manufactured ready for reassembly when we receive the centre casting.
[IMG] Running boards and splashers have been repaired and are currently being riveted back on.
[IMG] Reverser has been overhauled and fitted to the frames.
[IMG] The ‘golden nut’ and screw replaced due to excessive backlash on the original.
[IMG] The drag box under the cab was wasted so it has been replaced with a new casting.
[IMG] New buffers, draw hooks and shackles have been manufactured.
[IMG] All axles have had the tyres replaced.
[IMG] The main driving axle has had new crank pins fitted.
[IMG] A new tender tank has been fabricated in our boiler shop and fitted to the frames.
[IMG] Brake gear on the engine and tender fully overhauled including new pins and bushes.
[IMG] The Melesco multiple valve regulator has been weld repaired and is awaiting machining. We have a new set of valves for this on the shelf ready to fit.
[IMG] A new set of cylinder drain cocks have been cast and are awaiting machining.
[IMG] One piece pistons have been forged and are currently being machined. On receival of these we will be able to machine the crossheads which have been white metaled.

You do not need a Facebook account to read it. I do not have one ( never had one) and can read it.

Well, I've just tried again, with a different browser, and I still can't. But it doesn't matter, now that post #654 has reproduced the content.

That's one heck of a list of work done - but boiler apart she should be good for at least 2 main line 'tickets' without too much expenditure after that lot.

Was under the impression a lot of work was being carried out on the engine and that this is a big job. Some of the stories on the previous pages of the thread have been quite helpful, leading up to this work update. Glad to hear they are at the point where parts can be put back together. Also it has been quiet on other locos in the LSL fleet that are in the overhaul queue. This is why.
