I thought that its longevity may have been due to it being listed. When full of water, the tank must have weighed a bit...

September 1975, the Bristolian Tynesider. Stood in a vestibule all the way from Tamworth to Newcastle and back again to Sheffield where steam came off. Window hung every inch of the steam leg. A great trip and the highlight was a fabulous climb by 4472 northwards from Darlington.

4472 on 8th June 1969, at that time the only steam loco permitted on BR track, hauling a Hull to Edinburgh return special.

The train is passing Stobswood Brickworks on the left of the photo and Stobswood Junior & Infant School on the right. Needless to say the fence separating that road from the ECML is no longer post and rail. This was the first time I'd actually been there, having walked just short of 10 miles that morning to suss out locations (my bike was knackered and public transport US). My wife, whom at that time I was a year short of meeting, went to that school in her youth and the photo was taken on her dad's birthday. 03a-4472-'Flying-Scotsman'-Stobswood,-8-June-69-fbook.jpg

I remember that one leaving what was then Platform 14 ay York the day after the opening of the NRM. It was always a difficult departure for north bound trains and in this instance 4472 took so long to get going that the next signal had reverted to red before it got to it, so had to restart all over again. 75-9-28 28 27 copy.jpg

North Yorks Moors Railway, the early days.

A sleety and cold Easter Saturday morning at Goathland on 28th March 1970 and my head was throbbing from a lock-in at Beck Hole the night before.

That could well be my mic out of the middle door of the leading carriage.
