Perhaps not, but you do appear to be having some sort of meltdown after reading that some people may want to save 7027.

Other opinions are allowed, and there's no need to use derogatory language if you disagree. I doubt many here would appreciate being called a rivet counter or anorak.

By the way, it's "Thornbury"... old chap ;)

Thornbury Castle or Razor Blades Castle. Whats tbe difference old chap?

Not having a melt down at all, just merely pointing out there was an equal amount of wailing when the 8F got chopped for the County thing. Still happened nonetheless as i'm guessing this will. Money talks, money sulks and money throws the toys away when its bored. Its a long done deal with somebody with deeper pockets than most others. So therefore buy it and play with it or make a model of it and pop it on the fireplace

Utterly incorrect, where on earth did you get this “nugget” from?

Nobody asked Michael Gregory to remove his locos, so far as anyone was aware he was still the Honorary President of the company.

Apologies if I have wrongly assumed the GCR actually asked him to remove his locos, but it does seem from various postings (examples above) that there was a falling out of some sort that resulted in him removing his loco(s).

That was me; not to offer it as a valid argument but because it would be a poor argument, as is the argument that we already have a Star in the NRM.

I raised that matter way back in post #1050.

What is the current state of 7027 at GCR regarding its overhaul? How many components is it missing (not sure I've seen a photo of it with a tender) and what was the likely extra cost to get it back in steam?

The GC asked him, politely, if he would mind behaving in a way that was appropriate to his official role - their Honorary President.

They neither asked him to cease being involved in the railway, nor to remove his locos. Any such decisions were presumably his alone, or made by his family.

There was certainly a falling out but Michael Gregory absolutely had the opportunity to be Honorary President for the rest of his years with his reputation intact. The fact that he seems to have chosen a different path is entirely down to him. And actually demonstrates precisely why the GCR needed to extract themselves from his influence.

What triggered this apparent act of petulance? We can only speculate but the removal of ‘his man’ as MD seems to have happened at about the same time.

The act of selling (giving?) 7027 to the 4709 lot seems to have been designed to cause maximum anguish to the GCR staff who have worked on it, oblivious to the fact that the people he is hurting most were hitherto some of his biggest remaining supporters. The man is clearly too ignorant to understand or care how this act would affect the wider preservation community. He is no preservationist, that’s for sure.

If I was running the 4709 project I wouldn’t have touched this with a barge pole. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I’d be very interested to know where you heard “the other side” from, and indeed what “the other side” is.

Pretty much aligns on my theory as an interested observer. Effectively 7027 has a destruction order on it to spite parties aligned to the GCR.

That’s the nice thing though. Money may give you leave to act like a spoiled child, but it can’t always do everything. It appears that in this case it has failed to buy a railway “by the back door” and it has also failed to buy respect.

Just an aside here: is the Michael Gregory mentioned here the former MD of Cromwell Tools?

reading this slightly deranged post makes me inclined to think one possibly two bottles too many were consumed

As always when people protest the suck it up buttercup line is trogged out . We are allowed to protest , we are allowed to have a rational discussion about why this is wrong . If you or anyone objects you are not obligated to read or respond and if it really upsets you that much log off

To be fair to him, Michael Gregory was more than the MD, he WAS Cromwell Tools. He literally built it up from nothing, and made it into a staggeringly successful business. It doesn’t appear to be doing so well since he sold it.

Still not an individual I would trust so far as I could throw, and certainly not a man I would like to share a pint with, but credit where credit is due.
