IIRC without looking it up there was supposed to be less trouble with the tube plate. Presumably this was observed in superheated boilers. Superheating was quite widely fitted to the pre group 0-6-0PTs as well as tender classes with the P boiler but was being removed again from the tank classes by the time the 57s were introduced.

Surely dummy superheater elements would burn away in short order?

Dont think they have to go all the way to the Firebox end.. or can unused flue tubes can be fully/partially blanked off as an interim ?

Agreed. Two S/H elements isn't going to be much use!

We're talking about flues, not superheater elements.

They never go all the way to the firebox end. Four-row superheater elements were shorter then three-row. Blanking them off could be dangerous.

Not quite I think the boiler of 44901 was sold to Ian before the group took it over . Boiler I think had a monel stayed firebox and was in reasonable condition . Rather like the acquisition of the boiler from 92245 before it got sectioned for display

The plan was an 8F boiler from Turkey as the group , or those active within it had access to a potential replacement in Turkey from an 8F

Superheated P class boilers typically had a single row of 6 flue tubes, and 48 or 36 elements.

So what has happened to this plan to acquire a Turkish 8F boiler?

I'm not sure matters have been helped by potentially fragmentation of the group. If the same proponents were involved in the VoBR scheme

So no new build Star project then. Excellent, that is at least a start toward Thornbury's survival. A minor victory for preservation, but still the removal of the boiler hangs over both Thornbury and the 4709 group badly.

Its going to be intersting to see how this pans out, I see the GWS CEO is again wading in on Facebook, I would suggest he bears in mind the recent outcomes relating to the GM of Avanti and social media....

I don't do FB, so haven't seen. But the quote in RailAdvent is pretty clear.

Not fitted yet but the plan for 44901 is to use an 8f boiler, although admittedly not heard much about the project for quite a long time.

    By the way, can anyone advise what the current state of restoration Thornbury Castle is in;
Does it have a Bogie ?
    Motion ? Tender?
Have the frame plates, between frame castings / wheels, tyres, pins/ boiler been surveyed and or tested for condition ?
Is there a collection of cab and boiler fittings ?

Has anywork other than cleaning and painting been done ?
Have any components been made ? restored?

Think i would have much more sympathy with the ' but it was going to be restored (wasnt it?)' lobby if some idea of the work done /funded was a bit more out there.
