Spotted this video with Tangmere at Penrith (2-25 ) and what a fantastic tribute whistle to the family of Mike Middleton.

Accelerating away from Grayrigg loop WC BoB class No. 34067 'Tangmere' works the 'Northern Belle' through Beckfoot and on to Carlisle with David Blair driving, Martyn Soames firing and Roly Parker Guard

'Tangmere' working the return leg of the 'Northern Belle' towards Aisgill summit with David Blair driving, Martyn Soames firing and Roly Parker Guard, a very poor turnout today with only two people at the gallery position that I could see

Following some overnight rain the day had remained dry save for the odd spot or two. The forecast for around 6pm was somewhere between dry and a thunderstorm!? There were long term roadworks on the A666 at Wilpshire with 4-way temporary lights at the junction near the station; there had been tail backs on Saturday with light weekend traffic - midweek??? I decided to give it a miss and head over to Chapel Lane at Hoghton to watch the train speed towards the summit on the long straight. As the weather was set to be iffy, Mrs W volunteered to accompany me and act as brolly holder (if required).

We arrived in plenty of time just as the sky began to darken. As we waited there was the odd flash of lightning and menacing rumbles of distant thunder. A check on RTT, just as the heavens opened, revealed that Tangmere had reached Daisyfield Jn 14E and would with us in about 10 minutes - the rain was never going to clear in time. A quick turn around and over to the crossing at Hoghton where at least we might(?) see the train flash by in what was a torrential downpour.

Not long after we arrived the crossing lights flashed, the barriers lowered and a train sped off in the Blackburn direction. The lights continued to flash, the barriers stayed down, there was a flash of lightning then Tangmere appeared. She was quickly gone, the coaches with water cascading off the roofs and finally the diesel with water trailing in its wake. Oswald and Mrs W did not leave the vehicle at any point but made their way home where it was barely raining. A balmy 20C had become a more pleasant 13C, the train was far too early with an undetermined speed that should most appropriately be measured in knots.

Thank you for that capture of Lancashire weather. But what was that other car doing on the wrong side of the road?

It was there when we arrived, had its engine running throughout and left as soon as the barriers lifted, so I assume the occupants were waiting to watch the train. A bit like dropping kids off at school, never mind safety, park as close as you possibly can!

I'm surprised that crossing survives since Station Rd isn't over busy as the main road bypasses it on a bridge.

After photographing 44932 on the M&C, it was a quick dash across to the S&C to capture the return working of the Northern Belle, 24.09.22
