Sounding superb at Chester le Street on time, heading back down South. From onboard, 1 engine only, blasted loads of pics, to check for 1/2 engine operation, no significant exhaust smoke, making it hard to tell.

Edit It was on 1 engine only, 47 giving a healthy shove....

D9000 during the pick up stop at Stafford earlier this morning. Cautious departure away from station but soon found its voice when out of sight accelerating northwards. 47 didnt appear to be assisting away from Stafford. 20220924_081735.jpg

Cut out tripped on departure, too many beans having been given :).

Happened a couple of times and not unusual, I gather.

I was on this from Stafford and can report that it was a brilliant day out.

More or less on time throughout, and sustained high eighties running outbound and on the old Deltic stomping ground on it's return.

Clearly some help from the rear at times; Shap was breasted at higher speed than a one engined Deltic would achieve. Somewhere in the seventies, I believe.

And the descent from Shap towards Carlisle was "enthusiastic", with the highest speed of the day recorded there.

Congratulations to all involved in getting RSG into it's present condition. Two engined, it will be even better!

I loved the Deltics, I started Trainspotting before they were all named and later, for the first 5 years of my married life I used to be able to hear their wonderful roar from my bed as they took trains on the ECML. That two-tone green was my favourite scheme. To me they just didn't suit the BR Rail Blue. It made a magnificent machine look drab. A memory of D9000 was me sitting patiently drawing that magnificent spread-eagle emblem of the Royal Scots Greys from a photo in a library book while the 1970 drawn FA cup final of Chelsea v Leeds took place on our TV. Saying that, although D9000 looks great, I'm not convinced that the livery is quite right. The lovely pale green skirt around the bottom looks too pale and too bright. It should be like the pale green mid-band of a 47. Similarly, the white surround on the windows looks a little too white. I remember it being more off-white. (EDIT, looking at henrywinskill's photo of D9009, where the white doesn't look as bright, that's more like my recollection )

I'm sure somebody will be along to say I'm talking a load of b*ll**ks, but that's my recollection.

All I'd say is that maybe the BR ones you saw were not quite as clean and well cared for. If, God forbid LSL ever let RSG get a bit dulled and mucky, it might look like you remembered it :)

Bit like a modern steam tour with the 47 on the back doing all the work.
Still created a few more pages of vitriol on wnxx as to if the tour should have run or not.

    I don’t think D9000/55022 was ever a Gateshead machine ;)

They were invariably smart and clean. Even our local ones from Gateshead. They were after all only a couple of years old when I first encountered them. Same with the class 47s. There were only about 50 in service when I saw my first one. Smart as a new pin.
