This is theft, pure and simple providing you can prove it.

If there is a financial benefit involved, otherwise it is just a copyright infringement - bad manners, perhaps, but not criminal !

My reading of IP infringement is that it is punishable by a fine, arrest, or imprisonment, whether or not financial gain is made. I do hold patents by the way

    Personal view.

The moment you choose to post an image on social media including your own Facebook page etc I would have thought that you are fair game for the image to be lifted. But as a courtesy it would be good to acknowledge the ownership of if it is not your own image rather than post as if it were your own.

I think that definitely most photographers understand that.

If the image is available on line, anyone can post a link to it, and that is surely the obvious thing to do. It happens all the time here. Saving it locally may be technically a breach of copyright but unlikely to be noticed or to cause much concern even if it is. Saving it locally and then uploading it as an attachment as if it is your own does seem significantly different.

I'll take your word for it but I would have thought it was a civil matter not criminal.

Or take a screenshot, I have uploaded screen shots from Instagram where it is clear where it has come from. Where it names the photographer I make sure that is included in the screenshot.

I think unless the photo is obviously out of copyright, the best thing is to generally to link to source - that way you see the photo in the o tended context, which might include supporting text and other photos. If that source is behind a paywall or password, then so be it; you have to respect the reasons someone might post in that way even if you don’t agree.

The exception would be a photo that explicitly allows sharing in a sharing statement (such as Creative Commons), though even there, quite frequently the specific conditions require attribution.

Embedding a photo as a stand-alone with no indication of where it is from and no attempt to disown that it is your own photo is I think not on.

Not that easy with Twitter Tom.
I misread his NP name as IanDaniel. Looking closely I realised it was @IamDaniel and that he sent the tweet.
I didn’t credit him when I posted as I was unaware he had actually taken the photograph. For all I knew he could have seen the photograph and simply retweeted it.

Dunno, take this simple quiz to find out:

How do you like your Mars Bars?

    (A) Deep fried
    (B) I don't eat them myself, but find they are useful quiz prizes or handy wagers in bets
    (C) Mars bars? Disgusting, I only eat Green & Blacks 85% cocoa organic dark chocolate ...

    You answered:

    Mostly A - No, you're not posh, you're Glaswegian
Mostly B - It's gambling awareness week, gambling Mars Bars might seem harmless fun but just watch for the warning signs if you feel the need to raise the stakes to a Bounty three pack. Whatever you do, don't get drawn into gambling away your last Rolo.
    Mostly C - Yep, posh.

Definitely not A. Not B either as I don’t gamble with Mars Bars as I only bet on certainties. I do get a few that way, though and I eat those. As for C, …….

Point of detail, the only time I’ve ever been offered deep fried Mars Bar was in a hotel in Alice Springs, served if I remember with banana.

    I didn’t partake.
