The film doesn't make much sense [2nd male lead and winner of least convincing accent ever, Sean Connery (RIP)]
The constitutional history of the titles previously held by his current majesty do not make a lot of sense. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_of_Wales]
There's no obvious reason why Frederick Bulsara's band chose the name they did. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_(band)]
But yes, as Sean Connery was an advocate of Scottish independence, to use a name that is the same of one of his more (in)famous films as the next loco after PoW is a touch piquant

At least I'd been to the pub...

    I think it's much simpler.

Given the A1SLT's love of seemingly associating itself with the military, we have:
    • Tornado - Air Force
    • Prince of Wales - Navy (aircraft carrier)
    • Highlander - I can think of at least one Scottish regiment that has "Highlander" in its name (e.g. such as those carried by 55 016 and 55 021)
Plus - where is it most likely to spend its life puffing around?

The more I think about the Highlander name, the more I ponder why they didn't go for something like Maid of Glamis - one of the unused P2 names - or Pegasus - unused W1 name - or Bantam something (put your choice of bird name there).

That being said, Highlander is certainly marketable, and you now have a locomotive that could very easily be associated with a Scottish army regiment. That would be one each of the armed forces for each of their locomotives.

It's certainly memorable - links to the film aside - and at least it will fit on the side of the smokebox!

I did wonder if we were going to see the V4 emerge, with all the changes we have seen in the last two years in terms of fuel costs and availability of coal. Of the three new builds, you could cogently argue the V4 is likely to be successful, with a much smaller grate area and 5MT equivalent power in a locomotive that had quite wide route availability in LNER/BR days, fuel efficiency should be good.

Those posts were confusing enough, but 2959 is even worse. I haven't the faintest idea who any of the persons referred to are/were.

I think that Mr Bulsara's first name was Farouk rather than Frederick, although I am prepared to accept the possibilty that Frederick is the anglicisation of Farouk

And "being marketable" is something the A1 lot will have to concentrate on in years to come.

Personally, I don't see any more of their projected locomotives coming to fruition, viz. the V3 and wasn't there rumour of a K3? As we are rumoured to be past the point of no return now where climate change is concerned I don't think the attitude of "there's nothing we can do so let's enjoy it whilst we can" will wear with most of the public (apart from the selfish and unintelligent ones) and I can't see much of a future for steam locomotives - and even diesels. The "oh, but it's only a tiny percentage of pollution" argument simply doesn't wash any more.

The moniker of 3402 was only ever stricly unofficial of course .... and s'pose we really ought just to be glad it's the first element of 3401's name being toyed with for themes.

I see that the loco's Wikipedia page is updated to include Highlander

Personally, I rather like the way the Corris respects the traditions of the historic line and (one valid special case aside) doesn't name it's locos.

Hang on a minute, Simon. You cannot put whatever your choice of bird name in with Bantam. Bantam itself is a specific type of bird, namely a small chicken, so once you've used Bantam Cock and (unofficially)Bantam Hen that's it. There is no such thing as a Bantam Bittern, Bantam Kittywake or Bantam Sparrow.

Peter (who knows nothing about birds;)).
