1.25" off the tyre profile would only make it 1.25" lower, not 2.5".

Its not really noticeable on Castles as its only the cab, King's look like they have been sat on especially the valve bonnet which just looks odd.

Kings looked strange lopped , especially 6023 which I think was trimmed lower being on full new tyres . Given the history of some of the monarchs beheaded seems an apt but strange description is that makes sense !

So, basically, what you're all saying is that, as a non-main line candidate, 7027 is potentially the best option to see a Castle "as Swindon intended it". Yes?

(I assume 4073, 4079 & 5051 are "untrimmed" but as they are all either static or at best confined to shuttling up and down a siding, not so impressive.)

I think the cab height reduction, whilst sympathetic to the form of the original does look quite obvious on 7029, it changes the 'classic' 3/4 view. Same with the 2 mainline Royal Scots. I'm optimistic the changes to 6024 are more proportionate than were applied to 6023 in the ill-fated attempt to get it on the mainline tho - recent photo's from Minehead are definite cause for hope!

You cannot use clearance at a level crossing as a guide to normal wire height, since the OLE is usually ramped up to its maximum either side of the crossing to give greater headroom for tall vehicles using the road. See section 13.3 here: www.tcipower.com/TCI/Technical/Network Rail A Guide to Overhead Electrification.htm

4079 should be stretching its legs at some galas in 2023 - watch this space!

Though that sounds an AWESOME idea, for practical reasons, I doubt that will happen, Didcot do need something to work the "Main [Demo] Line". :)

Really brings home why dismantling is the only option for this rusting away hulk.

As long as its sitting in the shed no great harm will come to it. The problems would come if the space is wanted for something else. We never do hear what's going on in the background, and who knows whether a viable plan for taking on and restoring the locomotive is being formed. It would be enormously frustrating for those who have worked on it in the last two or three years to have it all come to nothing.

I think we are supposed to take into account some sarcasm in the 'rusting away hulk' comment? As far as I can see, there is no rust visable. Someone has been doing restoration work in fairly recent times.

Interesting that you only ever see an old picture in the press of the rusty frames sat outside, never the picture we see above!

Might that be because certain people within the GWS, and Editors of a magazine want you to believe that, it is an rusting hulk, not an engine that has been under recent heavy restoration ?
