Ah, the Muddle And Go Nowhere :)

Passed a bit of it this morning, in fact. Another of my favourite lines.

Errrr.... but you're hardly impartial here ;)

I would love to see 34081 out on the mainline in her current livery (it'd be a wonderful splash of colour) but unless I buy tickets for and win that Euromillions lottery, it ain't gonna happen...:(

To be fair, Ian’s always been very consistent in his view about 34081’s livery.
From my own view from 5 and bit years ago at the Bulleid 50 event at the Nene Valley, 34081 was a very bright ray of sunshine on a very grey day in Peterborough.
I still think BR large logo with a grey roof seems to suit most BR modern traction… Those straight sides of a Spamcan would also suit it… As would Load Haul or Colas, what d’you think Ian? ;):)

Matt's not been drinking. He's just no sense of taste and aesthetics. My point is proved beyond doubt by the fact Matt likes BR large logo blue.;);)

Chromatic (not monastral) blue, with the silver BR logo and running number (as featured on 4VEP 3417 .... though even I draw the line at orange curtains for cab windows!) .... obviously. Look lovely at the head of a rake in "blood and custard", would that.

    Now where's my coat ...... ? :Bag:

Simples. They are painted in that nondescript and boring blue.(along with 31128.) Like most blues, it weathers poorly, as well.

Though 'monastral blue' certainly lost it's lustre quite fast (and everything back then seemed to vanish under a patina of brake dust brown in fairly short order anyway), I'm not at all sure that's still the case. An old (car) sprayer of my acquaintance always claimed red was the very worst, followed by yellow, then brown. That was during the 70s, when most cars rusted before they had a chance to fade.

Sir, I will politely disagree with you, I’d hardly say large logo is non descript though, it was an attempt to brighten BR blue up. As ever though it’s always subjective :)

That’s ok then, one of the sectorisation era liveries would brighten things up nicely. I always felt that “Lion” looked rather good at Grosmont in Network SouthEast colours.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but it kind of proves my point that BR blue was drab or, at least you are agreeing with me.

I wouldn’t say drab, boring maybe. I’d say all over BR green is drab.

It was, which is why the BR design panel came up with the two tone version. Much more pleasing to the eye.

I actually liked the original, small logo, version of BR blue.

another query I've just thought of is some steam locos got lined green when they weren't purely passenger types and should have been lined black. It seemed to be a Western region thing and a few which spring to mind are Ivatt class 2 2-6-0s, standard class 3 82000s and some GWR types, Prairies and a few panniers.

    any others?

Absolutely agree. I always think it’s a shame that more use of it isn’t made of it on preserved Bulleids. 34023 and 34081 being the only ones to have carried it in preservation, the rest just keep getting turned out again and again in BR green.

It would be particularly good to see 34007 (oldest surviving light pacific) and 34070 (last loco ever built by the Southern Railway) in malachite.

In 1956 the regions were given some autonomy and the Western decided to revive some old GW traditions by painting all passenger and mixed traffic locos in lined green. The coach livery for important express services was chocolate and cream but they weren’t kept in fixed formations and were soon seen all over the system. The Southern went back to green for passenger rated stock and the LMR chose LMS lake for some of its Pacifics.
