A statement this morning from the GCR to announce that 92214 is to remain at the railway.

It appears to have been purchased from the existing owner according to the last sentence: "The acquisition has been achieved by the GCR’s supporting charity David Clarke Railway Trust becoming its owner, and financed with the help of a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous".

I believe the exiting owner is Mr Micheal Gregory, who also sought to dispose of Thornbury Castle.

    Full statement:

"92214 to remain at the Great Central Railway!

We’re delighted to announce the successful outcome of negotiations enabling prized loco no 92214 to remain at its Great Central Railway home.

In mid-2022, the loco’s owner, indicated a wish to secure its longer term future. As a result, negotiations began with a view to 92214 staying at GCR. Chairman Richard Patching comments: “Negotiations can’t always be rapid and maintaining confidentiality for everyone is paramount; nevertheless, the discussions proved to be positive and cordial throughout, leading to a most successful outcome for all parties. Patience pays off and I’m sure all GCR supporters will welcome the result.”

The owner felt an important factor was that 92214 should remain at GCR where it will be well looked after and continue to play its part as a true main line loco on a double track railway.

The loco is an ex British Railways 9F 2-10-0 tender loco – a type designed in the 1950s specifically for hauling heavy freight trains, but also often used on passenger trains. Locos of this class were employed extensively on GCR until the mid-1960s which coincided with the line’s rundown/ closure by British Railways.

The acquisition has been achieved by the GCR’s supporting charity David Clarke Railway Trust becoming its owner, and financed with the help of a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous".

A good acquisition for the line, and good to see her staying put. Though she must nearly be approaching overhaul.

At least it’s not likely to be broken up to help recreate another class of loco. ;)

It would need renumbering to 92077(?) to be prototypical though. At least I think it was 92077 that ran like that.

Can it be the same person who has sold both locos? If so, there is a striking contrast between wanting this one to stay at the GCR and specifically preferring the other one to go off to the 4700 project.

Personal interests apart, I would imagine that 92214 was of much more interest to the GCR than Thornbury Castle

I’m sure it was available to whoever had the money and was interested in it. However it’s obvious why 92214 was more appealing to the GCR, more appropriate for the line, complete and in working order.

So the David Clarke Trust now own this and 6990? Do they own any other steam locomotives?

I think it was this one Steve - 92167 (one of the three stoker fitted 9Fs when built) stored at Carnforth 3/8/68 IMG_20160828_0020 (2) 92167.jpg

Hasn’t this been debunked in the past 10 or so years?
Albeit by Steam Railway Mag so it could be BS?
Bit like Railway Mags article that 92203 is at York masquerading as 92220… ;)
Really looking forward to the ‘Curator with a Camera’ on that one :)

Ex Saltley machine I believe Peter, one of the longest turns by one crew was Saltley-Carlisle via Derby, Sheffield, Leeds and the S&C, I think this was something to do with trialing mechanical stokers

From what I’ve read, I believe that 92167 had ran hot and was allowed to return home at reduced speed minus its connecting rods to get it off Eastern Region territory and back to its home region,
hence it being at Carnforth minus certain bits of motion.
Not being born until 1984 I’ve no idea how true this is :)

From what I recall that is the gist of the story, Matt. The train was a Heysham - ? Leeds oil train in June '68. As by then it was a rare regular daylight steam turn it was closely watched by enthusiasts. It was definately a one off and the loco was condemned on arrival back at Carnforth.
