No idea about Didcot, although quite possible. About half a dozen locos certainly left Barry for the SVR by rail in the early days, hence my caveat of after sitting around for 15 years :)

Interesting topic, how about 42700, it arrived at Keighley by rail from Hellifield and departed by rail to York.

Yes many of the early Barry rescues left by rail. Certainly a few each to the SVR and GWS. Maybe some other destinations too?

After a few years, and as the condition of locos in Barry continued to deteriorate, BR put a stop to it.

I believe 80079 travelled to the SVR from Barry by rail. I know it did several mainline runs, but has it been anywhere on a low loader?

    Yes it did.

As far as I’m aware only 4150 hasn’t been on a low loader of the SVR fleet.
It stayed quite a while IIRC into 1995.

It also made a fleeting visit to the NYMR in Nov. 1998 as a main line back up for 65894 which was doing a special trip to Whitby for reason that now escape me. As I recall it ran light from Pickering to Grosmont on the Thursday. On the Saturday it piloted 2253 to Pickering then worked as rear gunner to the J27 to Grosmont and back again. We disposed it at New Bridge that evening and it was off back home to the SVR on the Monday.

I suspect that 5428 has only moved by rail. From Tyseley to NYMR. I don't believe Eric has ever left, NYMR since arriving in the early 70s.

Good shout about 4150, was wracking my brains to think about what from the SVR would count, the only ones I could think of were the Thousands (Modern traction I know) and isn’t there a reason to not transport them by road due to something to do with the transmission? (Possibly one for another thread though)

I was going to say HC 1309 Henry de Lacy II which was delivered new to Kirkstall Forge by rail and was moved from there to the Middleton Railway by rail where it has been ever since. However, I’ve remembered that it was once put on a low loader for a Lord Mayors show.
The loco does have a potential claim to uniqueness, though in that it was built at Hudswell Clarke’s in Hunslet, Leeds and spent its life at Kirkstall Forge, about 8 miles away. Its journey to Middleton was a similar distance in the opposite direction. Is this the least travelled loco in existence having never been more than 8 miles from its birthplace?

Possibly one lost in the creation of this new thread?
Didn’t it have an overhaul at Andrew Barclays in Kilmarnock? How did it get down there?
