While we're in "what's that in the background" mode, what is this vehicle?

From my own POV, I'd like to see the two tank wagons restored along with the LMS brake van next.

Unsurprisingly, the A4 Charter has sold out already - within four hours of going on sale.

That suggests to me you could have priced it a fair bit higher! Good news though, bit more in the wagon kitty :)

It's a tricky one - fitting it between end of service trains and end of daylight on Good Friday means time will be limited, so we tried not to over-price it. But yeah...we may stretch to a small number of extra tickets, but no decision has been made yet - we don't want it to end up too crowded either.

I remember when the good Mr. Cameron used to bring 60009 to the NVR you were well advised not to try and park a car at Wansford as the parked cars stretched all the way back to the A1 slip road...

Here's hoping the NVR can get the Fletton Loop sorted in time, then. A recreation of the Down Scotch Goods?

Apologies for nearly a couple of months of radio silence - life can be busy/complicated, so let's try and catch up...

A reminder that the DL83 (RR Sentinel) powered freight driving day on Friday 31st March still has a few places available (and includes the unusual format of driving through the tunnel to Yarwell and back):
    https://nvr.org.uk/product.php/375/dl83-freight-course-new-for-2023

Looking further ahead, we now only have a few morning session slots available for the usual format full line freight driving experience with 92 Squadron on Friday 2nd June:
    https://nvr.org.uk/product.php/377/take-the-chance-to-drive-92-squadron-with-our-freight-train

Sleeper replacement on the Fletton Loop is on track, but there's still a way to go before we get the green light on it.

So, a quick recap on what's happened prior to last weekends work session, with a small selection of photos from each session (more on FB).

"A tale of two Brake Vans…
Today we headed to Wansford to carry out some work on the running rake.
We had noticed that since leaving the works Brake Van B954024 had some pealing paint, so armed with scrapers, sand paper and paint, Phil, Cliff, Gareth and new member Matt Baker (welcome Matt) got to work rubbing down and repainting.
Meanwhile, after getting the stove lit in preparation for the lunch break, Tim made a start on the repaint of his Brake Van which was a few wagons down in the siding. Having been in traffic now for 12 years it is in need of some work. New wood is required in places, but whilst there was time today Tim made a start repainting the bits that don’t need repair.
As the day progressed the grey Brake Van (B954024) was looking great and so Gareth and Matt gave Tim a hand with his Brake Van B953944.
At the close of play B954024 was repainted, apart from the lettering which Tim will reapply later and B953944 had one end repainted.
Another great day in the world of wagons!"

"There was plenty of achievement today at Wansford.
The first job was a repaint of BR Van B785122. Whilst Matt, Jason, and Phil got on with rubbing down and painting the south side, Tim painted the ends.
Meanwhile, Cliff painted the step boards on Brake Van B954024, which was a leftover job from last session.
Once finished with B785122, Matt moved on to signwriting B954024 and Tim did a bit more painting on his Brake Van B953944. Cliff then also painted the bufferbeams of B785122.
The team then made a start repainting BR Van B771300, which will hopefully be completed next session.
All this work is leading up to the years freight driving courses where we’d like the rake looking as good as possible, and of course our photographic charter with Sir Nigel Gresley. Places are still available for the driving courses, but the Sir Nigel Gresley photo charter is sold out."

"With 8 members of the wagon group on duty today we have achieved loads on the running rake.
The first job was to rub down and repaint BR van B786075, so Jason, Cliff and Colin cracked on with this, whilst Tim did some filling and Matt made a start sign writing the MOD opens.
There was then no stopping Matt and he started painting lettering on anything that wasn’t moving, which meant that vans B771300 and B785122 had their bodies lettered, then all the vans received lettering detail to the chassis….this attention to detail is fantastic to see.
Tim and Steve then got on with painting the ends of the vans whilst Stu and Josh made a repair to the chalkboard on B785122.
To finish off those vans that had been painted, Stu and Josh painted the headstocks and buffers and Tim repainted the blackboards.
By close of play the rake was looking great and certainly ready for Sir Nigel Gresley. Next session will see Tim’s Brake Van receiving some care and the lettering reapplied to B786075."

And bringing us up-to-date, last weekend saw us giving some TLC to Tim's brake van and reinstating the house coal designations on the hoppers...

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongr...CS5EZ1DyRXBsYEbU4Dz6X1dYQNymihYB3S5pnnFCPLyVl

"During the week Matt sent the artwork to Tim for printing and Tim then pieced together 16 sheets of A3 to create the largest template he’d ever made to complete the lettering on the Hoppers.
Matt was then very keen to get on with the signwriting, and what a fantastic job! Unfortunately, rain at about 4.30pm stopped play and one Hopper wasn’t completed. Three and a half Hoppers in one day is pretty good going though!
Meanwhile, Tim, Stu and Josh got on with repairs to Tim’s Brake Van B953944. Josh was very keen to keep the stove going to help paint dry on the inside, so Tim made a start taking out the ducket windows and painting the metal. Stu stripped off rotten panelling under the duckets on both sides and rotten skirting. Then together Tim and Stu fitted new wood and got some paint on before rain stopped work!
At close of play the Hoppers we’re looking great and Tim was very happy with the repairs to his Brake Van. B953944 will be repainted and the lettering on all running wagons completed in time for the visit of Sir Nigel Gresley."

How's the work on the Fletton Loop going, Stu? Must admit there's nowhere cosier on a cold day than in a guard's van with the stove roaring*.

*actually, a burner's hut atop a brick kiln in the 1970s does just pip it.

My understanding (I see the internal reports for volunteers, etc. but am not sure how detailed I can be in public, and I haven't been able to help on it myself) is that it was on schedule (possibly even very slightly ahead) as of end of play last Wednesday, but the Thursday session was cancelled due to the snow. Friday's session had already been moved to Saturday (to allow volunteers with full time jobs in the week to help out at weekends), but I haven't seen any updated totals since last week. We (the Wagon Group) are reasonably confident that SNG will be here, but it's taking a lot of hard work (not necessarily by all of us, but several of the group have been out on the sleeper gang as well as maintaining our own sessions to ensure the rake is in good nick for the photo charter).

Apologies for the extended silence - life and work have been manic, and we haven't managed to get across for working sessions recently, but here are the most recent updates which are now being posted on our website blog and then linked from other media...

The scheduled sessions in April/May have been targeting the stock in the bay platform at PNVR, getting everything smartened up for the museum van opening on the evening of 2nd June following the freight driving experience during the day. Unfortunately 92 Squadron isn't going to be available for 2nd of June, so we have had to switch motive power to the Peak 45041 "RTR" - and as a result a few places have become available at £150 per person - email nvrwagons@gmail.com if interested.

Cosmetic work on B780952, including a door re-skin and painting, update on the Scammell trailer, and evaluation of vacuum braking spares for when we start to get the brake gear working again on various vans:

    https://nvrwagons.wordpress.com/2023/04/24/23-04-23-preparing-for-the-museum-opening/

The private owner wagons at PNVR received some attention, B70952 had the other door re-skinned and painted, and a start was made on the Mackerel. Up at GCR Tim's Scammell trailer is nearing completion:

    https://nvrwagons.wordpress.com/2023/05/07/07-05-23-wagons-and-a-coronation/

The 21st saw the completion of the Mackerel hopper back in to black and sign-writing applied to it and B780952:
