Dumb mistake. Ran a test this morning. First time with mic on that body and I think I hadn't fully engaged the jack so it came loose right at the wrong moment after working on the three dry runs.

A couple of mobile phone shots from another very enjoyable RTC day out.
Thank you very much to all who posted Images and clips to enhance the memory of the day.
Re united with 44932 at last since a notable 'Duchy' trip some years back when it was 'demoted' en route by the diesel but ended up leaving it behind at Newton Abbot on the return.

44932 heading over Dandry Mire. Unfortunately it's silent. I was Cack-handed in setting up the mic on a windless day that would have been perfect for sound.

Thanks. It's a pity that I made a mess of it, but it helps me in the future. It was my first time videoing with that camera, but I'll know next time.

Typical day out with the trains. Five hours driving, half an hour of messing about getting set up etc, an hour of anticipation. And a minute and a half of action. :)

You're not the first and won't be the last. Years ago I messed up videoing 6233 on the Royal Train over the S&C. Similar thing, plenty of test shots that worked ok, but somehow I managed to flick the switch the changed it from a video camera into a stills camera just as it came into view!

Thanks, it is a good location and I intend to try it again later in the year.

Now the VAR team have looked at the potential trespasser and ruled that he is "onside". @LMarsh1987 called it correctly. At this point there is a narrow under bridge for a path that goes beneath the line. There are stone walls either side to retain the embankment. It is possible to walk up the inclined coping stones on top of the walls whilst remaining on the public side of the fence. Whilst it is possible, especially on an icy day, it probably isn't the wisest spot to choose. A frame from the video just as the loco reaches the under bridge shows him by the steeply-inclined fence on the Clitheroe side of the under bridge.

Don't kick yourself Alan as it better than not pressing the record button which I've done a couple of times while panning only to realise at the end when its to late but we've all been there at some time, you captured a lovely shot there and its nice to see you back out again.

I've done that shot and yes its a legal position but I'd recommend any one trying this shot to do it hand held as I got a lot of vibration while the full train was passing.

Thanks you, gentlemen for the correction. I think I have seen the video that chap took, and it's certainly a prime spot, and he must have got down safely and lived to tell the tale...

Not in the real days of steam it didn’t. I had a 5 on 13 on the 2pm Glasgow in 1966 and it gained time on an admittedly easy schedule. 30 sustained up to Shap.

These locos can do more than you would expect from a class 5 . See my HR column but of course we live in today’s risk averse society and we really can’t let the poor punters get cold can we?

Risk averse may be operationally, but these days I am afraid not acceptable for the majority of the passengers for their fare of between £100 and nearly £300

So do you and @RalphW as stewards think there is no chance of diesel-free on any of the WCMEs?

I think the limit for a 5 over Ais Gill was 9 so the driver would have had the right to ask for an assisting engine

The Manchester originating one usually has a diesel, the Euston one’s don’t. I can’t see any reason why that would change?
