That definition is also supported by the OED.

I think Chamberlain may have said something like that in 1938 and look what happened next.

    I'm sure it is.

Yes but World War and a financial crisis are too different things entirely.

I seem to remember there is a war going on now that is causing much of the financial pain.

This neo-Crimean war you speak of is also giving me an earache but, hey ho, life goes on.
I cannot stop you being who you wish to be but, I will choose to be positive and ignore all the doom and gloom. :)

Not a usage with which I am familiar - so didn't understand.

I’ve always understood ‘slated’ as coming from the idea of something written on a piece of slate or, later, a blackboard. Commonly found on the wall of many a workshop. For many decades small framed slates were used daily by just about every child, at school, to practice writing at a time when paper would’ve been very expensive so ‘slated’ is a term which’d easily’ve made sense to many past generations and hasn’t yet died out.

I find this conversation interesting in that it's a term I can't remember not knowing in this context, is not one whose etymology I'd expect to make me especially aware of, but is obviously far from common knowledge.

I too was surprised at it was a term frequently used at work and I thought on the TV and in the print media as well.

As far as I can see - it is more common in AM english - I think in the UK we would say Schedule or Roster. Susie Dent had an interesting chat about Roster on Countdown about a week ago. It is related to Roast - meat was roasted on a metal frame which left a pattern of lines on the meat similar to the lines on a roster.

My OED begs to differ, which is why I find the question of experience so interesting

It had to happen, the KESR has caught a doze of Bigchufferitus, there is no cure, you have to let it take its course, i would recommend an 9f, followed by a Castle, and if its not cleared up, an A1

Playground name calling - it's feeling a bit sore about being called a big chuffer ...
