St Rollox used to outshop its locos like it, 44871 has run with slightly larger cab side numbers in the past (another St Rollox trademark)

I thought it was an Inverurie touch which is why 46512 was done in that manner. Scottish workshops were notorious for little flourishes.

As I say I’m not sure what works it was, it was a little trademark of somewhere north of the border though.

The Bulleids all came back by road, so I think this is just loco and support coach. According to photos on Facebook, the line is all reconnected at both Vaux End and the other relay at West Hoathly, with everything ballasted, tamped and tidied up as well.

The explanation given for the complicated route on the SR Facebook page:

"The moves are worked out by LSL and Network Rail, taking into account crew route knowledge/relief locations, spare pathing, suitable water locations and provisions and ensuring the facing direction is suitable for the return leg. It’ll make for a good advert of her visit by taking in lots of different places en-route".

I wonder if LSL are also using the move as a crew training run to cover some routes in the South?

I assume it's to do with the engineering works at Carstairs Junction.

    I’m guessing that’s a 2 or 3 crew job?

It could have gone via Dumfries but I believe crew route knowledge could have sent it via Edinburgh. Mind you steam over the E&G all the way to Cowlairs is rare but made possible by the current timetable frequencies.

Must be surely. Especially as I would imagine that because of it going the long way round crews would know some bits but not others and not too many sign the whole E&G these days. The section west of Polmont rarely sees steam.

I really don’t envy them, tough job being on the railway.
