I thought I would look to see how the T3 compared to similar offerings by the GNR at the time; in 1892 Stirling was still using singles for express passenger work so I had to come forward five years to when Ivatt took over. His 4-4-0 ran at 170psi and had 1,124 sq. ft. of heating surface, the grate being 17.8 sq.ft.

These were LNER class D4, GNR class D2.

The Adams 4-4-0s were, for their time, arguably as good as it gets. The T3 4-4-0s. were essentially
    the X2 with smaller coupled wheels (6’7” vs 7’1” ) and larger fire gate (19.75 sq,ft. vs 18 )

There are available details of extensive indicator trials of X2 No.582. ( Institute of Civil Engineers Vol
CXXV 1895-6 ) and in Pettigrew’s “Manual of Locomotive Engineering. p.282-313.
There were three return trips Waterloo to Bournemouth and three Waterloo to Exeter.
Maximum power output on Down Bournemouth was on 1/314 at MP28 40mph RFO 29.5%,cut off, IHP 684.
In the Up direction on the 1/252 up to Roundwood 43mph, RFO 26%, IHP 614
On Down Exeter at 31mph on 1/80 IHP 804 and on return at 27.5 mph also 804, RFO and 48%.
Coal consumption 30.5lbs/mile down, 28.1 UP.
It has been claimed (IMHO reasonably ) by among others J.F.Clay this is the only instance of a loco
operating as efficiently as 2.5lbs coal per IHP hour in the nineteenth century,
These figures suggest similar performance power wise as an LMS 2P and relevant to Heritage Rail
    operation a Churchward/Collett 45xx/55xx 2-6-2 tank, albeit as noted a comparatively.low factor of
    adhesion.

Five coaches comfortably on either the Blubell or WSR.

Indeed. I was hoping this might fool a few people on here but you’ve spoilt the fun already.

Hardly. The idea of April fools is to detect the silly story from the truth. I doubt many on here would believe this particular story.

I can’t quite work out if that’s a real 30563 number they have had made, or if it’s photo shopped.

Anyway this was just meant to be a bit of April fools fun. Shame it didn’t go as I intended.

On the other hand you seemed to take great offence that I had 'outed' your story.
    Anyway let's move on.

Is 563 on tops ? I guess it must be for it to have moved out of the NRM, I'm surprised that someone hasn't yet, photoshopped her with a 988563 number on the cab side and modern overhead line stickers, :) or have i let slip next years april fool spoof.

I seem to recall reading somewhere, some time ago, that 563 was used on one occasion to haul a Dunkirk evacuation train made up of ten (?) LNER coaches from Woking to ??
Does anyone have access to any war time records that might help confirm the point - such as date, destination, etc.

It’s from an article in the Southern Railway Group Newsletter written by Tony Sedgewick titled ‘The last days of the Adams 4-4-0s’

“On 4/6/40 it was noted leaving Woking heading towards Basingstoke with a troop train of 12 LNER corridors, one of the many Dunkirk evacuation trains.”

12 is quite a load for a 4-4-0. They'll be wanting to try it out on a Greater Manchester binliner next instead of a 66!
