….. who has now made the following statement ……

“My apologies to anyone who inadvertently has been blocked. Be assured I have not directly blocked any Twitter accounts. I can only assume it’s either a glitch or my account has been hacked. I have now reset my account following security advice from Twitter.”

And I think we can count on the fingers of one hand all those who will believe that....

It's true we don't know all of the facts, so we can't come to a fair judgement about the original allegations and who was right or wrong. Even the ELR failed to come to a conclusion about who was right and wrong it seems according to their own statement, which makes it even more bizarre that the consequence was then chucking out the complainant, if there was no finding either way. So I think we do know enough to consider it more likely than not unfair, even without coming to a conclusion about the original allegation.

Rather contradicts the email statement apparently sent to ELR staff and volunteers, shared elsewhere on Facebook and thus copied to here.

When using a line of defence, it's key to remain consistent.

    FB_IMG_1680985903060.jpg

Any ELR volunteers on here willing, if possible, to confirm that email is what was received?

A simple user error of mass blocking Joanne's followers regardless of whether or not they engaged with her tweet. Pull the other one. Blocking is an act you have to do out your way to do.

Perhaps, but people will react to what they can see. The ELR statement wasn’t sufficient to allay the concerns raised by what has become public. Leaving aside the “pile on” mentality of twitter there are still grounds for a serious concern about what has happened. Time will tell whether such concerns are justified or not, but the bad PR will live on for a while I fear.

I'm not sure you can mass block your own followers on Twitter, let somebody else's. A quite spectacular own goal on his behalf, especially to then put out two differing statements, both of which sound like bovine excrement.

This really doesn’t reflect well on our movement does it?
    I’m awaiting @Lineisclear to defend this one…

I'm not defending anyone, but, is the response in part because some people in power, don't know how to handle assertive women, in their normal life perhaps the women the interact with are subservient, or they prefer them to be, then they come up against a strong opinionated woman, who will not back down, for some men, that's a threat to their manhood, I have known several like that, they are ok with men, but throw a good skilled woman into the mix, who know their job, and are bloody good at it, and you see their true nature, i had a manager like that, he did not accept women could be good managers, and came unstuck, over his treatment of her, she was belittled by him in front of the chairman, who too a dim view of him, because her section was the best performing, next day, We had a new manager,
The ELR, now need to decide, is Mr Kelly now a PR disaster and do they back him, or sack him?

I think there are 'bots' you can use to do things like this, its something I've heard of in the past.

Anyway, never say 'I was hacked!' or even suggest it as a possibility as in this case. No one's buying that. Much better just to be honest and say you made a mistake or were just feeling frustrated and blocked people. Regardless of if you're in the right or not, it can't be nice being on the receiving end of a social media pile on so I sympathise there. Better to block people than to lose your temper at them and make unwise comments back at them to be honest. Or even better, just don't use twitter at all.

There must be some sort of irony about 2999 being out this weekend

As someone replied to the ELR on Twitter, ‘The only Lady of Legend who matters at the ELR is Joanne Crompton’

Email received as a member today:

Statement by the Board of the East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society regarding Joanne Crompton

The East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society is aware of the appeal lodged by our Director and Member, Joanne Crompton, against the revoking of her volunteering position on the East Lancashire Railway.

Many people may be confused by the similarity between the names of the East Lancashire Light Railway Company and the East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society and find it difficult to distinguish between the two. Indeed they may think when they join the Preservation Society they are also joining the East Lancashire Light Railway Company, but this is not the case. They are two bodies with the same aim which is 'To support the Heritage Railway'.

In order to help to clarify the situation the difference is :-

The East Lancashire Light Railway Company is the operating company which manages the Railway.
The East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society is the organisation which collects your subscriptions, assists in the funding of Capital Projects, produces and issues your magazines and helps look after the interests of the volunteers.

The decision regarding Joanne Crompton has been made by the East Lancashire Light Railway Company, not the Preservation Society, and any communications pertaining to this action should be directed to them.

To clarify or muddy the waters even more, who actually owns the ELLRCo?
