A heavy fuel oil, no doubt with pretty unpleasant combustion products. It was cheap though.

As a 2-10-0 with flangeless centre drivers, Dame Vera won't get to Whitby.

Locos dont refuel there anyway... Need to convert a Scarab dustcart/ electric milkfloat type thing into a tanker and run a collection service round the half dozen chippies and donut makers down there and then take it up to a New* biofuel conversion plant at Grosmont ( *can get a grant for that maybe...)

The problem with bio diesel is the waste glycerol, which is often incinerated. So better to burn straight vegetable oil.
If I was looking for a liquid fuel I would investigate using the cheapest fuel possible that would be acceptable for environmental emission limits. So may be a blend of wastes ( examples include waste solvents like methanol or MEG) with a diesel/ kerosene/ vegetable oil. Also must not be hazardous to health for handling by crews.
