    On the Vintage Trains thread
The Saphos trip will presumably do Drayton Green Jn - Hanwell Jn, which is a common curve for ECS but a very rare one for passengers.

I'm on the English Riviera Express on Saturday. A slightly longer day than originally anticipated as there is an engineering blockade between Standish Jn and Westerleigh Jn, so between Cheltenham and Bristol the train will take the Gloucester to Newport line, and then reverse to go through the Severn Tunnel. As that diversionary route is also being used by the Edinburgh - Plymouth CrossCountry trains as well, our outward journey had to be before the first one of those, with the return being after the last one had gone through.

That aside, this will be my first post-overhaul mainline trip with SNG so I'm looking forward to it (fire risk notwithstanding).

My rain dance is working well. We've had heavy rain today at Bristol and Taunton. I've noticed on the Railcam that Dawlish has also had a deluge. <BJ>

What's the rationale for reversing rather than just turning left at Maindee?
Edit: I was being obtuse. It is via Chepstow, so no left turn available.

Because it is coming down from Chepstow not down the Marches route so no left turn is available.

Very good thank you. Excellent day out. SNG looked immaculate and sounded fantastic. An unexpected bonus was passing Powderham Castle Classic Car Show near Starcross where we exchanged whistles with about a dozen steam traction engines. I'm just about to trawl YouTube to try and find a video of it!
