It is more than just a shiny Victorian locomotive though. It will become an integral part of the fleet, and an important part of the motive power plan to keep the railway going in years to come. The first locomotive owned by the railway, it will give them security going forward, reducing reliance on locomotive owning groups, and is a more sensible and economical size for the line than some of the locos currently used.

I think it is a wonderful thing but removing reliance on loco owning groups is a double edge sword. Yes it increases security but actually, having separate loco owning groups, who do not generally take a profit or a wage out of their income and do their own fundraising, probably reduces costs compared to owning their own engine. Anyway, as I say, I think it will be wonderful and provdes an exemplar for the E4 please (or failing that J69 or J17)

There is no doubt that hiring in locos owned by largely volunteer run groups is usually a win for the railway as the true cost of ownership is usually hidden. However, a majority of these groups have an aging membership and I can see this way of doing things coming to an end as time goes by, probably with the locos being donated to railways, as has recently happened with 80136.

Yes. Don't get excited, it's only a fantasy but I'd love to see the last 'intermediate' (if I've got that right) crossing the Y14 at Weybourne

    That’s the one.

We have mentioned this before but I wouldn’t mind seeing them blast out of Sheringham past the golf course ;) Also wouldn’t mind seeing the E4 doing it’s thing as Cambridge pilot too, its air braked so nothing’s to stop it shunting the 387’s around at Coldhams Lane.

This thread also made me think of GER 490. I don't expect to see any of the national collection locos currently at Bressingham running again, but then I thought the same about 70013 back before that was restored. So you never know.

Nicely done Alan, cut out the first and last paragraph of my posting to suit your response.

What a strange comment. I simply quoted the part of your posting that my comments related to. Pretty standard practice on Internet forums.

What a beautiful sight. This is going to be one very popular engine.

Having now seen what removal from the National Collection looks like, I'm drawing up a list to pass on to the NRM! What a fantastic sight.
