There were rumours that the LNER J69, J17 and E4 had wooden dummy parts so couldn't be restored, but given what is done nowadays I wonder how relatively difficult they would be

Don't know about those mentioned but 1008 has a wooden chimney. I don't see that as being a bar to any return to steam, though.

Indeed, and I'd like to nominate the large-boilered C1 too.

As my family moved to Essex just too late for me to see it, I should love to see the Tilbury Tank properly restored and running again. On the Bluebell, alongside its restored Adams cousin would be perfect. One can dream!

Mersey Railway no. 5 'Cecil Raikes' was originally part of the National Collection but subsequently transferred to Liverpool Museums. It was built in 1885 but re-boilered in the 1930's.
It would appear that its future will be as a stuffed exhibit in the new Wirral transport museum, unless sufficient pressure can be put on the museum to restore it. Perhaps an article in one of the magazines.

No chance for either, I suspect. Both are pretty much as they were following fettling at Crewe & Swindon prior to going on display; in addition 46235 isn't part of the National Collection anyway, and is now well and truly blocked in

Sadly, you're probably right. Although the fact that they did get attention at Crewe and Swindon would most likely mean that they probably would be reasonably ok to overhaul. 563 got a bit of fettling by the Southern before going static which has helped

In this environmentally-conscious age we live in, wouldn't it be fun to get what was BEL1 running again and giving brake van rides?

That has already been deaccessioned by the NRM - now at Foxfield I believe.

I would love to see it steam but the current owners are of the opinion that too much original material would need to be replaced unfortunately. It would at least benefit from a cosmetic overhaul though, last time I saw it at Foxfield the paintwork was looking a bit tatty.

I never understood the logic of deaccessioning that loco in the first place (lots of interesting facets of railway history it could represent), but ho-hum, water under the bridge now.

Maybe it's just me, but I would have no interest in restoring something cosmetically for static display, to me, it would have to be working order, no matter how much would need to be replaced, given a big money pot obvs!!

No. There are exceptions, very early ones can not be considered, even if they were runners they wouldn't really be of much practical use on a heritage line. Although I did enjoy seeing Lion in steam in the early 80s
