Have you heard of a little machine called ‘Lucie’
It’s been on the telly and everything.

I’m not an Ops manager on the NYMR or the KESR, but I know I get really fed up with people with absolutely no knowledge and experience telling me how my job should be done in my own line of work.

Seriously and in the nicest possible way could you just maybe let those that know what they’re on about just get on with things?

That was pretty much my intended point in responding to a post claiming an Austerity was not that powerful .

I’ll be the first to admit that an Austerity at 25mph is not the smoothest loco, especially when compared with a Cl. 4 tank which is pretty much a Rolls Royce in comparison. It will certainly bounce on some of the jointed track. They won’t do 80,000 miles between bottom end overhauls, either but they will do the job and will be a lot cheaper to maintain than a superheated loco. Coal and water won’t be a problem although modifying the bunker to the BR arrangement would increase the former, as well.

"68030" already has the larger BR bunker fitted.

I didn't think I was arguing with you! But I was arguing that smaller locos, although nominally just as powerful, might not be so useful.

You weren’t and I was largely agreeing with you. They aren’t as powerful though, not by a long way. Thinking so is due to an almost universal misunderstanding of what power is. It is not tractive effort but is a function of that times speed. Thus, for example, a Black 5 and an Austerity may have similar tractive efforts but the former is three times more powerful as it can go three times the speed. It also has a boiler that can produce three times as much steam.

Is her daily mileage 72 miles a day though? And is a significant portion of that mileage climbing gradients of 1 in 49?

She’s perfectly suitable for Gwili requirements, and no doubt for lines of a similar size. Can’t comment any further.

Oh I'm not disputing that. My point was merely the NYMR is somewhat more exacting than almost any other heritage railway in the country, so locos that are capable at other lines could well struggle

The boiler has been lifted back on to 44806 today. Pics on Facebook if you use that.

Perhaps, then again, when Errol Lonsdale was at the MHR, they never really used [or liked] it and they are shorter and flatter.
You guys know what your doing and I respect your judgements.

Matt37401 I apologise that I have offended you.
I will refrain from such comments hence forth.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that Errol Lonsdale was an ideal engine for the MHR, or that WD193 was well suited to the SVR when it was there. Antwerp wasn't ideal for the NYMR. In all these cases the Austerity, which was primarily designed as a shunter, was displaced by engines better suited to the job and less demanding on their crews when they became available. It probably didn't help that Austerities were regarded as "industrials". That doesn't mean, though, that 68030 will not be able to do useful work on the NYMR and I for one will be looking forward to seeing it working there and providing an interesting contrast to the bigger engines normally used.

44806 progressing well at Grosmont with the cab fittings and pipework now being added. The paintwork on the tender is superb

I noticed recently that Heritage Painting have a WD tender in at the moment for a repaint. I presume this isn’t DvL’s tender?

Yes it is Vera's tender. Riley's have rebuilt it. The boiler and chassis remain at Grosmont (photo taken on 11th August) [IMG]

Dame Vera is said to be going in to Grosmont Shed for its overhaul to begin in earnest once 44806 is complete and moves out - so hopefully quite soon.
