4247 has now entered the workshop at Cranmore for its overhaul to commence. Attached are a couple of final photos of the complete loco taken during the shunt to get her in.

Last Tuesday (16 May) two cranes were employed to remove bunker, boiler and frames from wheels. Details can be found on East Somerset Railway Workshop and Running Shed News facebook site.

Not been an update on here for a while, the frames are currently stripped and being cleaned up by water blasting. The wheelsets are away at the SDR being fitted with new tyres. The boiler is currently being cleaned up prior to NDT assessment and the myriad smaller parts are being cleaned up inspected and repainted.[IMG]

Very impressive from looking at the post on the workshop's Facebook page.

I'm guessing the ESR is the place every Dartmouth engine go to to be overhauled and tested before being sent back huh?
    Guessing 3803 will be next?

Not necessarily. Dartmouth are doing 7828 and did 4277. Contracting some out to ESR merely allows more overhauls to be done than the DSR have to do themselves. So if 3803 is next in line to be overhauled, it'll probably depend on whether a space comes up at Churston or Cranmore first as to where it goes, and whether Cranmore have the capacity to do more overhauls for the DSR or whether they need the space and manpower for their own engines (46447 is either due or will be due soon for an overhaul itself)

Yes 46447 is next through Cranmore after 4247 is completed. Nothing is agreed as to what would follow that so far as I am aware.

I see... Well I suppose in truth it does the railway some more toys to play with, must have been boring playing with 5637 and 46447 for years.

Anyway, glad to see another heavy goods tank being overhauled, as always I do hope it has a chance to visit other lines as wee succeed at Dartmouth.

However, here is a question: Are 3803 and 4247 going to get names?

I think it's less likely that 4247 would get a name as it's not actually owned by the DSR. 3803 may, but 4277 is running without a name at the moment so maybe not.

I think 4277 has now been refitted with its 'Hercules' nameplates. 4555 has never worn its previous nameplates since returning to steam though, so the DSR could still have become a bit more relaxed on its naming policy. I don't think any of its diesels wear names anymore either.

I always think the nameplates look very odd in that position. On the side tanks would look much better.
