Agreed 100%. The fact that our occasional 'drop-in' commentator with his red pen has been silent suggests that this is serious.

It would be a very strange member of NP who wouldn't wish the patient a full recovery.

Not helped that it's not easy to get the stock turned which would even the wear out a bit.

How difficult would it be if a few people swallowed their pride and then maybe the Turntable at Fort William could be used?

I’m not sure that turning would do any good given the switchback nature of the WHL. The other problems are the size of the turntable, that I’m sure would be too small to take a Mk1 and the tight curve to get onto it.

I don’t have all the answers John but aren’t the turntables at locations like Kidderminster, Churston and Pickering primarily used for turning coaching stock to even out tyre wear? Or am I talking BS?
Regarding its size isn’t it the ex Marylebone one? I would have thought that it would be big enough to accommodate something like a MK1 coach that’s something like 63ft long? (Using my memory for this I could well be wrong)
As ever in my usual long winded way, I’m just trying to say there’s a facility up in Fort William that potentially could be used.
I don’t know what the ins and outs are but WIBN if some use could be made of it?

I know very little about the current Fort Bill turntable, but I do know the original is now at Kidderminster on the SVR. A 70ft one, built 1948. We at the SVR do turn coaches every so often but as others have pointed out the WHL is a particularly challenging route for rolling stock and turning may do little to assist. You’ve also got to be able to safely get the coaches on there, turn them, bring them back and keep splitting the set! Pain in the rear!

I didn’t realise the TT at FW was a 70 footer so it could turn a MK1. The tight curve on to it could be a major problem but I would think that the the flange wear would be about even with all the reverse curves on the Mallaig road. I stand to be corrected by those who know.

As John says, the flange wear itself is not that it is excessive to just one direction, but an all over extreme wear. This tend to be compounded in drier seasons.

The past few years (covid affected excluded), the stock changeovers have been progressively during Mid-Late August and into September if I remember correctly.
Due to what Carnforth has available at the time, this has occasionally meant the afternoon train has temporarily run with Mk1 coaches until the Mk2 set returns from tyre turning.

As you say, the 'table is the 70 footer from Marylebone, seen here turning Duchess of Hamilton back in 1985. 85-5-26 2 46229 Marylebone copy.jpg

Clearly plenty big enough to turn a coach if needed, but as others have pointed out, that is not the solution to the tyre wear issue on that particular line. I have seen the old Queen of Scots Observation car (CR 41) turned on it however.

Pity that the TT is up north. One of that size was never needed I don't think. Meanwhile down south we really need one at Weymouth.

Sorry everyone - digression and I know it won't happen!

Cancelled until the 9th August now, so nearly a month, 26 days and 52 trains lost. 16,000 gutted people. Crazy.

I just assume that he means it is crazy that a company can have their operation inspected, found severely enough wanting to go through a prohibition notice process, and then be found wanting again within weeks.
