I hope that this is permissable, but here is a picture of an SK coach, cut in half, presumably prior to being shipped to Japan for the Harry Potter display. There has been an enquiry about it on WNXX and I cannot post it there if it is not on a website, so I intend to refer them to here. I hope this is acceptable. IMG_1914 copy.jpg

There appears to be no flange or studs for the top feed.

Coincidentally, a friend was just at the US version in California and the Hogwarts Castle there was absolutely a replica with fire guard tunnel as well. Convincing enough to the avid Wizard Cop and casual GWR fans out there.

Bit of extra brightness and contrast. I wouldn't be altogether surprised if not everything is there, but I certainly wouldn't offer an opinion. But it would be a lot of work to deal with the absence of boiler, its after all not just the cladding but the ashpan and everything under the footplate. Has anyone seen a spare boiler knocking round at Carnforth?

I assume that it she had to be made lighter gutting the boiler and smoke box would be a handy way of doing it, likewise no need for a safety valve or innards associated with a top feed as long as the covers were in place. Would seem odd to go to the hassle and cost of buying a locomotive and doing all the cosmetic woks to substitute the most visible bit for a mock up?

As far as i was made aware, all the parts taken off 4920 were sold to Wotton Hall based at ribble steam at Preston. So you would surely need to ask them what they got.

This video below has recently appeared on YouTube.
It contains some footage of 4920 in Japan and also a couple of pictures of 5972 and 4920 in Barry Scrapyard (along with a picture of my beloved 73096 at Barry which I had never seen before. The writing on 73096 says that she was reserved for the Camelot locomotive society -see still below. Did she actually donate any parts to 73082?)

I wonder if any HP fans from Japan will watch this video and be little cheesed off that they haven't actually seen the real Hogwarts Express?

"Fake" seems a bit harsh - it's an actual Hall, that actually worked. It's as close as you're going to get. The one at Warner Brothers in Florida is a mock-up and no-one's complaining.

I suspect this is going of topic, but there is a boiler knocking around at Carnforth which is stored outside and visible when one drops off the Furness line into the station, looking at it from distance I don't actually think its a GWR one, but I have always wondered what it is off.

I am a member of the FRT and it has never been mentioned either in their blogs, journal or annual report re anything being purchased from 4920? They have just purchased a coupling rod from the GWS (whilst No.20 was at Didcot and departed in No.20's tender!) and that has been publicised, so one would expect likewise if they got a load of bits from Carnforth?

Are we really now talking about a fake of an imaginary train being hauled by an imaginary loco which had enthusiasts mumbling about painting the wrong class of loco in a colour scheme never seen during it's working life??
    It's a funny old world.

I might have misjudged her and the degree of description she went into, but did JK Rowling give a detailed description of the locomotive in the books? (Since that is the primary source: book covers and films are after-the-fact interpretations).

Slowly the huge locomotive pulled into the station, its paintwork gleaming in the autumn sun.

“Locomotion Swindoniensimus”, muttered Ron Weasley under his breath, then, louder “A GWR Castle class if I am not mistaken?”

“It’s a Hall, you muppet” snapped back Harry. “Count the cylinders”.

Hermione bristled at the childish bickering. “They all look the same anyway” she said, and with that pulled herself aboard through the open door of the carriage …

(From “Harry Potter and the burnished chimney cap” by JK Rowling)

Interestingly though there are multiple occasions (Two off the top of my head are Hermione in Book 1 and Lupin in Book 3) where a character mentions going up front to have a word with the driver, suggesting a corridor tender, hinting at a Gresley Pacific...

But why would a wizard need a corridor tender ?
