Is it known whether this vehicle still contains asbestos insulation? If it does, that will be a massive barrier to restoration. Just look at the state of Carina - that's how it was left after asbestos removal........

Will be interesting to see what happens to these.

Largely unmodified 73138 naturally more attractive to preservation but the full mainline kit may attract a Southern based mainline operator. I'm not sure if GBRF are still interested in original 73's, possibly not...

The 73/9's are curious, their higher power makes them more useful on paper but they've had a lot of problems which will put off anyone (mainline or pres) who has been watching their performance for Network Rail (it is a widely held opinion that the GBRF 73/9 conversions have been more successful). I'd say the molestation will be a big turn off for pres but again would a mainline operator want two non standard locos with questionable reliably?

If they hadn't changed the multi-working to AAR instead of SR 27 way jumpers, they might've been handy for a certain Crewe based operator for dragging a five-car EMU along when it's finally finished. 1600HP on diesel and ETH capable would've been useful.

One of these, Aquila I believe, departed the Bluebell in mid-September, believed to have gone to a site near Weston-super-Mare, said to be a garden centre or similar.

Available for sale at North Norfolk Railway the M&GN Society’s surplus ex-LNER wartime Austerity BG E70621E. In need of restoration this unique historic vehicle is looking for a new home away from the NNR. It sits on scrap size tyres and is missing vac cylinders. All offers considered as it must leave the railway- if you’re interested please contact Nigel Scarlett by emailing Nigel.scarlett@btinternet.com

Make sure that you keep any useful spares off it if the worst happens. There's a lot of bits I can see there worth salvaging, if nothing better i

The preference would be not to scrap this as it’s unique. But if nobody wants it then that’s what could end up happening. It’s being advertised widely to ensure try to ensure its future. The logical home would be the LNERCA at the NYMR.

The problem is that the LNERCA already has a unique steel panelled BG which doesn't feature anywhere on the restoration queue, largely because it wouldn't have a use if it was restored. It would therefore be rather hard to justify taking on another, although as I'm no longer a Trustee of the Association I have no say. I'd suggest that somewhere like Whitwell & Reepham, or perhaps Kirby Stephen might be a better bet!

But I though the group at Kirkby Stephen were offering this for disposal and I believe - having had no offers - were talking about breaking it up for parts recovery:

    http://www.cs.rhrp.org.uk/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=861

That's an ostensibly similar carriage in terms of usefulness and has the distinction of being the oldest surviving Gresley Carriage (built 1906). So that suggests that their overhaul capacity is limited and unlikely to want to take on another vehicle?

Without knowing the circumstances it is difficult to know - the vehicle at Kirby Stephen might be privately owned, the Company might want an exhibition coach but the owner will not permit its conversion and wants it restored as a BTK. I don't know what the underlying story is, but over the years they seem to have been keen to build a collection of NER/LNER stock, which is why I suggested that they might be interested. I think a more likely sad reality for this vehicle , though, is a future as razor blades. With scrap wheelsets (does it have wheel bearings?)and no vac cyls its unlikely to be returned to running order - who would fork out for a new set of tyres for a BG? - and its only likely use is as an exhibition coach or storage. As an LNER coach enthusiast I hope that I'm wrong but sometimes harsh reality has to be faced.
