Perfect weather all round for todays circular. Captured climbing into Beckenham Hill, through Maidstone on the Medway Valley line, passing over Kingsferry Bridge, and tackling the 1 in 132 climb from Maidstone East at Barming:

The more that I travel behind Bahamas the greater becomes the admiration and respect I have for the quality and appearance of the locomotive and the work of the support crew especially as this loco is a long way from its home base.

The loco just faltered the once and that was on the tight and speed restricted curve at Archcliffe Junction when the diesel had to kick in to stop the train stalling. But to be honest that seemed more to do with the need for greater power to overcome the massive drag that added to the train's weight on the curve.

Some great climbing by Bahamas later on en route back to Victoria.

As you point out..a long way from home and a dedicated crew who give up considerable time. But down south is where the money is for these trips.

I ventured out with Bahamas yesterday and was impressed with RTC's running of this rail tour covering lots of new track for me - well done to all!

Thought this might be better suited for a future picture puzzle tease as photo opportunities at Sheerness were limited. However, yes, Bahamas did go to Sheerness on 11/11 although the port is also a welcome visitor to container ships from the Caribbean that pass the other Bahamas.

This site is called Tovil where the footbridge crosses the railway at the end of Bower Lane.

Was the 'falter' slipping? I just wonder about the balance between adhesion and power in this instance. If so, a single slip in November is good going indeed.

No, it was basically a near stall that the diesel retrieved. Think about a dead weight of 500 tons on a 20 mph curve and the added effect of the check rail. It needed an entry speed that could be sustained with the power laid down. It didn't feel as though that was happening. You can hit something like that at 20 and then roll to a stop if you haven't put the steam on full enough!

All in all, a most enjoyable day out covering some rare bits of Kent's rail network, and some decent shading of the steam map in prospect. Thanks to all involved.

I think the operation of the loco in the south does stretch resources a bit, remember they also have to provide owner’s reps and support for the Coal Tank that is currently operating away from home. With West Coast having its own fleet up north it’s the only way they can get work.

Wasn’t there a branch line to the Medway here once?

Indeed there was. A short goods line that closed in the 1970s. There was also a station. The footbridge is part of that history and gave access to the area east of the main line.

Yes, there was a branch that crossed over the Medway and served a paper mill and other sites. I believe Colonel Stephens intended to use it to connect the Maidstone extension of the KESR to the Medway Valley line.

When the girder bridge was demolished around 40 years ago the contractors managed to drop the whole lot into the Medway and had to use a large crane to fish it out again.

Just a personal thing..........I don't like that double chimney, it doesn't look 'right' on a Jubilee to my eyes.:Grumpy:

Yep, agreed. I was brought up on Holbeck and Farnley jubilees. Strangely I think FS looks right with the double chimney. As I said, it's just a personal thing, I liked Gordon Highlander in Porterbrook Purple.

I think Bahamas is a wonderful machine but I do tend to agree and think a single chimney is more pleasing to my eye on a Stanier Jubilee
