Does anyone know where 30925 was being stored in 1965 please?

I have found a report of it still being stored at Fratton in August 1964, but I'm not sure if it was still there into 1965. Preston Park could be a possible location for 1965?

I ask as I have an extra Schools class past and present photo 'spread' to go into my non-commercial SR steam loco memoirs book and want to find a reason for it to go into the 1965 chapter where it won't clash with too much else.

I hope this is the correct place to put such a query.

    This page ...

    https://features.rcts.org.uk/the-societys-locomotives/925-30925-cheltenham/

Says still at Fratton in August 1964, and was also stored at Preston Park. Which I'm afraid doesn't answer your question ...

As a little gripe: all the aeroplanes in the RAF Museum have an online data sheet (such as this one: https://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/documents/collections/74-A-12-Avro-Lancaster-R5868.pdf) that completely detail the movements of the aeroplane both before and after preservation. I've searched in vain for equivalents for NRM locos, but surely they must have been compiled "behind the scenes", and they would be very useful if they could be put online?

Well according to the BR database (complete BR loco database 1948 - 1997) the National Collection locos that were stored at Fratton had been transferred to Stratford Works (the old erecting shop) by 24/10/64, the source being given as SLS 196411. The locos identified there were L&Y 1008, 30245, 30587, 30777, 30850, 30925, 33001, 49395, 63460, 63601 and 71000. I think that some of these moved on to Preston Park sometime in 1966.

Not what you wanted to hear Bryan but I hope it helps.

I think you mean 70000 (not 71000). I visited Stratford twice in spring of 1966 and before 70000 arrived the B1 61194 was stored there. This engine was used for steam heating the carriages during winter of 65/66.

I doubt that 70000 was stored for preservation at Stratford on 24/10/1964 as it remained in traffic until 28/5/1966. However I agree that 71000's presence there is equally doubtful as it seems to be reported stored at Crewe North on 12/8/1964 and again 0n 15/11/1964. It appears that the Duke remained in Crewe from its withdrawel in November 1962 until it left for Barry in September 1967.

Interestingly it does seem that Britannia was stored at Stratford after it was withdrawn in 1966 and later moved with other National Collection locos to Preston Park. Once it was decided to preserve 70013 instead of 70000 the loco was moved to the closed shed at Redhill from where it was bought for private preservation in 1970.

The source of most of this information seems to be from the SLS Journals of the period if anyone wants to check in more detail.

Thanks Peter, and others for the replies. From the replies so far I can find suitable words for the reason I will put one 30925 past and present spread into 1965. Something along the lines of - After withdrawal from service in 1962, 30925 was in storage as part of the National Collection, and by 1965 looks to have been at Stratford Works having moved from Fratton in late 1964. Although detailed records fully supporting that 1965 location do not seem to be available. -

Formation of the sentences, including correct use of commas etc, is subject to change when my sub-editor checks it all in year or fews time. Provided the therapy he needed after doing the same for my 432 page Short-eared Owl book has worked!

    Thanks Peter and all others.
