Tornado might appear on the Cambrian to Welshpool or Newtown subject to gauging and completion of overhaul, in March or April for testing.

    Is that a genuine proposal???
Might have to arrange a couple of suitably timed 'work visits' if that is the case..

Incidentally, if Tornado were to appear at the head of a railtour to Aberystwyth, forget the cost - I will be booked on it!!

BTW we have had a Class 56 make it to Caersws in the last 12 months, plus regular 1000t log trains hauled by double headed 37s, so unless there some tight overbridges or platforms somewhere, can't see any reason why Tornado couldn't make its way into Mid-Wales..

Apparently due to a partial closure of the Dalby Test track due to a landslide, the only other place to test the ETCS.To be at night, since no paths at other times , so after 21:30 from Shrewsbury and before 6:24.

I very much doubt Tornado can go beyond Welshpool. I’m sure parts of the route become RA7 afterwards and Tornado is RA9

Mmm, might find it difficult to schedule a site meeting in Welshpool for 2am!
Interesting info though, as I thought there were differences between the old ETCS fitted to the Cambrian and the new systems being fitted to locos now. Does increase the chances of steam returning to the Cambrian at some point, would love to go to Pwllheli behind steam again.
Anyway, big thread drift and now a desperate attempt to bring it back - the return of Tornado does provide another air braked option for West Coast!

There has been a lot of work done on the Cambrian in recent years, the appearance of the 56 raised eyebrows as it was the heaviest loco seen on the line in a long time and itself was in connection with a timber bridge renewal at Caersws. It appeared under a whole line possession as the loco itself isn't fitted with ETCS.

Again though they are RA7, I’m almost certain you can’t get anything above 7 down the Cambrian beyond Welshpool.

I’ll dig out a copy when I can Paul, but to me it does sound a little bit like doing a ‘Rattner’ it does beg several questions about acquiring locomotives if that part of the business isn’t profitable.
Then again those at 10A are a riddle wrapped in an enigma in a puzzle.

Under normal conditions, no. But permissions can be granted for exceptions - I believe a class 67 made it to Barmouth.

He’s taken 3+3 and made 8 with this. Riley’s Facebook post said “Exactly four weeks after entering The Works, 44871 leaves for running-in as promised to one of our customers in readiness for 10th Feb”

Which is correct, it was promised to them in readiness for the 10th Feb Pad to Gloucester job which got postponed. Doesn’t mean it’s going to be on anything else. Riley’s have just stuck to their side of the agreement.

Was that before the tunnel was repaired and tightened up? Mid-2000s ish? The route has been RA7 to Welshpool and RA5 beyond for a good while now.

46203 was towed from Butlins in Pwllheli along the Cambrian route, although I will concede that was a one off back in the 1970’s.
