One simple fix for that situation, as has been used elsewhere, is to allow a member to nominate an alternative proxy to be used only in the event that the first one is unable to attend.

As @Meatman describes there was a large number of people huddled in small groups in the Hall waiting for the results of the count. Brom Bromwich called attention and stood on the stage. He did not formally reconvene the meeting (but he is not an Officer of the Trust). All the Trustees (and the Secretary) had disappeared except Anne and Chris (possibly Mike Whiteaker, I cannot recall). He then announced the results, and I was prepared with pen and paper to write down the figures for reporting on here as a poster had requested. I discount embarrassment, more like derision for those in the hall following the obvious reaction to the attitude of the majority six during the meeting. What a way to treat people; as has been said, it is as if we live in Russia. Do we start looking for hidden guns or poison canisters ?

Oh ! I was puzzled with this word, along with 'lol' and 'he he' - I thought loof was referring to graffiti on toilet walls. I am now properly informed. I must get a new OED.

Keep up! In the past I've had untold fun with Internet slang especially in the early days of chat rooms.

When I did moderating in Yahoo and other chat rooms we had great laughs as we all used the rather primative text to speech at the time, the mods usually had full head sets but the visitors typed text into the room except for a few.

Did you know "ROFL" means "Rolls on floor laughing", except when the first text to speech engines saw it as "Roffle roffle" and anyone using "lol" (laugh out loud) was literally lolling.

Omgee was an expression of surprise or shock and that awful ASL was just " 'assle", and resulted in an instant boot (remove from room).

Fun days, with so many I got to speak to across the world and at the same time helped thousands secure their computers or helped clean viruses from them by cleaning the registry, removing boot scripts, trojans, cih viruses and all sorts and teaching script kiddies a lesson when they tried it on.

Forgotten most of the how now...it's absolutely shocking to think that is now 20 odd years ago!

    Anyway...

Terribly disrespectful for the Chairman of the meeting not to wait for the result.

It goes agaisnt all the upset on here so I do apologise for the positive post.

Just a reminder, the season has started , the volunteers and staff are in full swing again and everyone was having a good laugh between each other as well as ALOT of extremely happy customers.

Sunday was a great day and our footplate was busy from start to finish with kids and adults of all ages getting photos and seeing the engine up close and personal.

Although the politics are shocking at the moment, the volunteers on the ground are doing what we/they do best ...working together and creating an experience for hoilday makers and locals alike.

    Indeed.

Given that the Trust's Chairman theoretically has no executive powers, then his entire function is to 'chair' (ie manage) Board meetings and General Meetings. If he can't be bothered even to do the latter properly, then why he is there at all ?

One wonders if he didn’t want to be around when the result was announced if he already had a sense the board had lost.

It does seem odd though - my experience from another society is that the results of votes are always announced by the chairman from the top table.

It felt odd - especially as Brom (acting as "returning officer") has no official post within the Trust.

Reflecting, it reinforced the odd sense I got when Peter Miles stated (and repeated when challenged from the floor) that the meeting was called for the purposes of the two dismissal motions rather than the articles. While obviously formally and legally incorrect (and also raising massive questions about whether this was really a Trust meeting), it would make sense of the behaviour at the end of the afternoon, as well as why the Articles were so weak in content and presentation.

Wasn't the prime defence for there not being the requisite 5% membership support for those ordinary dismissal motions that they were merely tagging on to the required EGM for the special motion though?

    My head hurts,

I'm not sure I've ever heard that explicitly stated. But I did regard the comment as really rather revealing.

Thanks Small Prairie for this positive post. I suspect that despite the ongoing politics, many of us just want to see the L & B get steadily bigger and better.

We do. But it's worth note the politics are fundamentally about the ability to achieve that shared aim.

Though of course the politics have been squandering resources that should have been contributing to that aim.

And/or, depending on your view, deflecting from the root causes of the current stalling of those aims.
