OS Nock gives some logs for Maunsell U and U1s (respectively 2 and 3 cylinder, 6 foot diameter driver versions of the Maunsell mogul family) in his book on Maunsell. Speeds into the 70s seemed common with both classes, and at least one of his logs has a U1 hitting 80, which is good going all things considered.

I don't think they had any particular issue with rough riding or being prone to derailment (though they were of course derived from the River class 2-6-4 tanks, which did have such a reputation, a fairly common issue with big tank engines). The Rivers though did have modifications to the pony truck (starting even before the Sevenoaks disaster) to give them more side control at the front, and those modifications were obviously carried through into the U / U1s. Both types were extensively used on passenger trains.

They did have smoke deflectors though ... :)

I don’t think Tom’s suggestion was meant to be taken seriously…

Didn't the Churnet Valley do one of these a few years back with 5197, 6046 & 2253?

The original one was, but if I recall correct they re-scheduled it for the January of the next year before 2253 went off to Paignton.

My blurry onboard footage from one of the triple header runs at that event. Not great, but you get a flavour of things. A very enjoyable event; it's not often that you can see and hear 3 2-8-0's triple-heading and charging up gradients that steep with 8 carriages and 2 33's on the back!

Weird to think that less than two months later we were all in Lockdown.

This shows it a lot clearer - barrel, inner firebox, and the remains of the outer firebox just in front of the loco. It's also captioned 42765's boiler.

It was the word "remains" that I was wondering about. To me it implies "no further use".
