I have come across a pre-grouping GWR pocket watch from circa 1915-1920, with the inscription GWR Engineering Department 149 on the rear - can anyone point me please to where I might be able to ascertain what this department was?

If it's any help, when I joined the railway in the early '70's, older hands would often refer to the P-way/Civil Engineers as simply "The Engineers."

Thanks both - guessing that 149 would refer to a team responsible for a particular location/section then. Time to ping STEAM in Swindon and see if their archives could shed light.

The number could just be to identify that particular watch, out of those held by that department (i.e. an asset number in modern speak), and to allow for recording to whom it was issued.
