I'm fairly sure it's been moved recently to a private site (I think not rail connected) and is being actively worked on.

It took me a minute. Roughly translated as "Here's the map, and there's a picture for sale on ebay at the minute"....

The locomotive is settling down to regular service after a few teething problems. The RH glut block bolt has not given further trouble; the loco ate about half a set of cast iron firebars when fed some dirty coal, it now has a full set of chrome steel bars which are lasting much better. The regular loading is up to five and sometimes six Mk1 coaches, with which it plods uphill quite happily, the gradient is constantly uphill for 8 1/2 miles at around 1 in 100.

The penberth ejector is satisfactory, even with six coaches but take time to create a full vacuum if a full application is made going downhill, the crews have learned to work around that. We did also obtain a Hugh Philips type ejector, so as that is in stock it might as well be fitted when time permits.

The identical brand new spare penberthy ejector which we got at the same time as the one fitted is now for sale, available for immediate delivery, and would be suitable for use on industrial locomotives. If anyone is interested, please contact me.

    Kind regards

    Tim

Can we have a caption, please? I have no idea what that loco is or where it is.

    Not my image, but I think;

Loco is Barclay 1969 ‘JN Derbyshire’, top and tail with FR no.20, looks like Bury Bolton Street station.

Yes I did notice it when looking at one of the Bury Bolton Street webcams the other day.

Still plodding away quite happily. It recently required a new centre grate support as the existing one had overheated and bent into a pronounced curve over a period of time. Dirty coal again, causing a localised fierce blast. The crews are cleaning the fire twice per day.

Meanwhile, we still have the penberth ejector for sale and also the SJ ejector previously fitted when it worked at Peak Rail. The SJ has been overhauled, but not tested and is minus the vacuum release valve which is in use on the locomotive. If anyone is interested please contact me.

Hunslet 15” King George, works no 2409, has been announced as the first visitor for the Embsay & Bolton Abbey’s Hunslet Gala in June. The loco is one of only two surviving 15”Hunslets and the only operational one. It joins resident 16” 0-6-0ST Beatrice in the lineup with more to come.

EDIT: Should have added that Austerity Cumbria, owned by the Furness Railway Trust, is confirmed for the gala too - making its final appearance before bowing out for overhaul.

Embsay normally have 4 steam locos in service over summer; Cumbria's withdrawal added to the loans for 52322 and 68067 being ended means that I suspect at least one of the planned gala guests may be a long-term hire?!

The Duke achieved 98 days in steam and clocked up about 5000 miles in 2024. It has passed the annual boiler exam and is undergoing light maintenance and mechanical checks and adjustment. It is due to re-enter trafic in April.

    Moorbarrow

This 17" RSH is working the trains in March, after which it will return to the Gwili Railway, so it is a rare chance to see it working this far North. It looks and sounds very well.

Copied and pasted from the Embsay & Bolton Abbey thread - the Hunslet Gala at the end of June now has a lineup of 6 confirmed locomotives which is incredibly impressive.

    • HE 2387 Brookes No 1, 14” 0-6-0ST from Middleton
    • HE 2409 King George, 15” built as an 0-6-0ST but currently running as a side tank, from Didcot
    • HE 2705 Beatrice, resident 16” 0-6-0ST
    • HE 1873 Jessie, 18” 48150 Class 0-6-0ST from Blaenavon
    • HE 3794 Cumbria, 18” Austerity 0-6-0ST, owned by the Furness Railway Trust but based at Embsay for the last few years. Due to bow out after the gala, for overhaul.
    • HE 2890 Douglas, 18” 0-6-0, converted from an Austerity tank, usually based at ELR.
In addition, it's hoped that HE 1440 Airedale No.3 will be on display in the shed - as the only other surviving 15" alongside 2409.

It’s shaping up to be a fabulous event and I have already booked a day off work

Peckett 1935 “Hornet” entered public traffic on the Ribble Steam Railway today, still restricted to light duties and being on brake van rides.

    Borrowed from Facebook:
Hunslet 3839 Wimblebury has now completed its loan period at the Avon Valley Railway and will return home to Foxfield shortly. Hudswell Clarke 1731 Jennifer takes over at least until June.

HC1731 has been at the Flour Mill workshop for a number of months as they implemented a modification to the rear axle which should improve the ride quality. I know sister 1704 Nunlow was known for being very lively at line speed so I assume it’s a similar issue. With the AVR being only an hour or so from the Flour Bowl Mill, I’d imagine it allows the modification to be monitored in service before the loco returns to its Aln Valley Railway (the other AVR) home.

    Hello There,

Andrew Barclay - "Kinlet" -Ex Highley Mining Company - Static display at Blists Hill, Ironbridge Gorge
    https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/works-no-782-kinlet-0-6-0st/

I'm one of the volunteers at Blists Hill and thought you may be interested to know we are cosmetically restoring "Kinlet," which as the last loco database upload showed, was looking very tired.

We're now aiming towards the colour for the period it was operating at the Highley Mining Company as that's most appropriate for the locale, as opposed to the faded dayglow green.

This original photo helps a little, but it seems the engine has lived a very quiet life and the museum does not have much information on it.
    A couple of articles make reference to it being possibly green or red;
"Railway Locomotives of the Highley Mining Company and Billingsley Colliery Company, David Poyner"
    https://www.shropshirecmc.org.uk/below/2013_3w.pdf
and "Odd Spots" in Steam Railway, January 2023.

The 'Red' is said to be something akin to the Highley Mining Company wagons, but we've not seen much evidence of that on the engine.
Looking at the image, I'm more inclined to say it's akin to Andrew Barclay's 'Works Green,' as seen on the much younger "Efficient," especially when considering the lining.
    https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/works-no-1598-efficient-0-4-0st/

Most likely going to be something like Craftmaster's 'Classic Green' unless we can get a better match.

Thanks for reading - any information gratefully received!

PS. Also any pointers to a replacement front buffer that's not made of chipboard like the last one would also be appreciated...
