It's a case that the person named on the ticket, must have some sort of ID, so as to prevent tickets being passed around and used fraudulently. When I've seen this advertised (and I believe there's posters at the booking office in pickering, or there was) this has been made clear.

Ok - which goes to my "if accurately reported" comment; there's a perfectly reasonable rule designed to tie ticket to user, but whcih sits outside of "who paid"

As to how the practicalities of putting names on tickets works, I can't help as I've never been involved from either the buying or selling side, Whether you can have multiple names on a single transaction would be a question to ask.

I've read the ticketing information on the website and I'm not clear on the requirements so I've asked the question. Whether I get an answer, time will tell.

Well, I asked the question. It appears that my post has been removed so no answer or clarification.

Not quite correct. I’ll just explain how the system works then answer the above post.
If someone asks for a £49.50 rover ticket they are asked whether they are a UK tax payer they whether they would like to gift aid (at no additional cost). If “no” to these questions then gift aid is turned off, but then irrespective to the gift aid questions they are then asked for their name and address as these details are used for the complimentary annual pass (with these same details copied across for gift aiding purposes if the intending passenger would like to gift aid).
If someone pays for, say, five rover ticket then the annual pass is then valid for those same 5 passengers for 12 months from date of issue, with the annual pass containing the details of the lead passenger. On a return visit the lead passenger then simply presents their pass at the booking office, and once identification is confirmed then day rover tickers are then issued up to the number of those originally purchased.
The rover tickets can be purchased on line, with collection of the tickets from the booking office prior to travel. Similarly, the annual pass can also be used on line with tickets similarly collected from the booking office subject to lead passenger identification being confirmed.

PS. Gift aid should only be offered if all passengers are from the same household,

It should also be noted that, if necessary, Customer Services can on presentation of the lead passenger, subsequently split a single annual pass for say five passengers down to five separate individual passes.

Thanks for the clarification, presumably multiple hoseholds could still gift aid but in seperate transactions?

This begs the question regarding the (hypothetical) additional four passengers who had tickets and whether they could travel again without the lead passenger being present. A second question is whether those other four tickets have names actually allocated to them for which ID is required and the obvious possibility if this is not the case.

It does seem to be a minefield.

The Talyllyn apparently operate a similar system. Is there's exactly the same?

Yes, the issue is deep in HMRC regulations about what is eligible for Gift Aid.

I have heard that there are a couple of new speed restrictions on the NYMR. One is 5 mph over a river bridge at Goathland and the other 10mph on the Yorsfalls to Newtondale halt section. There are some piles of ballast on the latter section presumably for repacking. Could someone more 'in the loop' than me say what the winter works programme will be? Usually the pway team do some big projects and great work during the winter.

As far as I am aware, there are no renewals planned this winter, however Grosmont P4 needs doing sometime soon so may get done early.
The TSR's may change things unless it can be sorted with a tip stone and tamp.

According to the unofficial forum that appears to be the plan being considered.

Visited the railway yesterday and trade quite brisk for the time of the year. No.29 on the 15.10 off Pickering ran out of coal on the three coach train. 5428 hauling the train I was on, the 14.10 ex Whitby, was despatched from Goathland where we had been held to rescue the 15.10. Charybdis came up from Grosmont to take our train back down the line as it was the Whitby set and needed to fulfill its slot on the branch. Once the 15.10 was back at Grosmont the class 37 took over to get us back to Pickering for 6pm.

Had a trip many years ago where 6619 ran out of coal. Vera was despatched from our train waiting at Goathland to fetch the other train before coming back onto our set and continue to Pickering

I’ve run out of coal three times in my time on the NYMR, once on little 29, and I have some sympathy for the crew as it may not be their fault. It wasn’t mine with 29 as we took it over with insufficient for the journey. Always going from Pickering to Grosmont, where the coal is but always managed to get to Grosmont by stopping and picking up timber lying trackside. In times past there were plenty of stacks of old sleepers or discarded fencing from repairs. However that’s not the case nowadays. For someone not familiar with 29, you can think you’ve plenty of coal in the bunker but the reality is that the bottom part is water tank.
Hindsight is wonderful and they could have got more coal from the Black 5 they passed at Levisham.

Nothing like making things unnecessarily complicated to confuse the customers ! Have you been taking lessons from the Big Railway ?
Stick to the KISS principle and everyone will be happy.
