Many years ago, whilst at Wheldale colliery (1980's), I saw a HST power car pass hauling a motley collection of coaching stock with a brake van at the rear, something I've never seen since. Was this something that happened from time to time?

Well at least 2 of the carriages appear to have go faster stripes. ;) Perhaps a quick trip to Halfords to get some for the third carriage . . . :D

Probably - I certainly remember being very surprised in my spotting days to see a single power car running light down the ECML but that was nothing compared to the veritable cavalcade of class 50s being returned to the WR from Doncaster one evening!

I saw an HST in service with only a single power car once. It was while waiting for a very early train out of Derby to get to Bath for a univerity open day in about 1991/92 (the one and only time I ever went to Bath... didn't pick that uni... it was raining). Not sure where the single-ended HST was going, it was on the opposite platform. But there were BR uniformed staff shaking their heads and saying things like "I've never seen that before". What they did with this train at the destination, I've no idea.
