Wow, especially the running-in group including two Duchesses, one a Polmadie rarity this far south. I bagged a group of locos on a similar trip at nearby Hadnall a bit later, sadly just a black five and some 2-64Ts from memory.

The Stanier Pacifics were quite common at Salop for two reasons. Firstly, it was one of the running in routes following a works overhaul and return to the home shed, but secondly, for many years Crewe North had only a 60 feet turntable on which they would not fit, so engines working in from the north were put on a local passenger to Salop, turned there on the triangle and arrived back at Crewe on another local pointed the right way for Carlisle and points north thereof.

Must have been a marvellous place in steam days with those running in trips from Crewe.
Been amusing myself trying to work out where the photos are.
1 & 2/9 are obviously on the shed
3/9 may be leaving Wem heading for Shrewsbury, can't be 100%sure though.
5/9 is on the through road in the station
6/9 the locos are stood under the gantry which used to stand by Abbey Foregate box facing towards Wellington.
8/9 from the Abbey in the background this looks to be just out of the station by Severn Bridge Jct
9/9 is arriving from the Crewe line at Crewe Jct

    a marvellous little collection.
