Therein lies the flaw in Victor's argument. If you have your hand permanently-extended whilst saying "give us your money" then people rightfully expect to have a say in the matter.

He's comparing apples with sausages - and not for the first time, I might add.

He didn't say that the A1 Trust's current policy of imitating 10A makes any sense; only that that is what they are doing, which is not entirely true but not far off.

Yes, that’s it in a nutshell.

I have it on very good authority that the firebox is out of square at grate level, by around 1.5 in. Hence the fouling of the drivers and, it seems reasonable to conclude, the on going grate problems, which started at the GCR well before any dodgy coal was encountered at the NVR.

I think in this case we are talking about Chartered Engineers. By way of comparison with
the A1 Trust’s current line-up here’s the Clan Hengist engineering team, in addition their chairman is the head of CTL Seal (where the loco is under construction), an impressive engineering company specialising in off shore machinery etc.

No surprise in which direction my donations and legacy are now heading ….

So assuming this is the case, what's the answer, clearly it has to be to take the boiler back off again, ship it back to Germany, and have the metal cut out, and re done, most Likely though something will be done, that might make it ok for the engine to steam on preserved lines, and plans to return to the mainline are shelved until something can be done. but after this I dare say the trust will need change from bottom to top and an injection of funds and experience from someone with the expertise to do it, someone like LSL and a merger with Crewe.

I'm sorry, but, I'm a chartered engineer of 48 years...it means nothing to me. You can have all the gongs and medals and titles after your name ..is doesn't make you an "engineer"....

I think you possibly need to find another word rather than 'engineer' to describe what you consider 'engineer', if even those with chartered engineer status don't necessarily qualify...

So how would you differentiate a skilled fitter from someone who can design something from first principles, and also diagnose the root cause when such a design had failed? Both have vital roles to play in an engineering project but rarely can one do both?

Can someone who has been on the footplate of 60163 since its return to steam, confirm what sort of grate it has, is it a fully rocking grate, or the drop section, as fitted to A4's ? If it's a fully rocking grate, then any distortion will affect how it operates, the linkages have to be able to pull, or push the fingers, and left and right have to slot into their respective places, If it's a drop section, often in the middle, then as long as this section is not affected then it should work, even if the rest is not sitting correctly,

An engineer will be someone who designs and can visualise how something should fit together, and work, A skilled fitter will be the one who takes the part that been made, from that design and be the one who makes it fit, and work in a satisfactorily manor, often making changes to the design to make it something that does what was intended. At least that's how i see it.

Thank you Sheff, does it have fixed sections along the top, sides back and middle, like on the Bulleids, then the carriers that hold the rocking bars, ? and obviously if the firebox is out of true, the sections will either be thrown sideways or there will be a large air gap between the grate and firebox on one end

If it's that far out of square, what is it doing on the engine?

    The interesting bit is "why"?
    Design error?
    Build error?
How did it get onto the engine if that far out?

    Misuse?
    Poor fitting?
Error in the process that only revealed itself after use?

Given the complete radio silence on the matter, I assume the cause is (at best) unclear...

I thought as your expertise and knowlege on boilers, you deemed the Dave Elliott design was flawed .... I repeat, I know nothing about boilers.... but then again you were unaware of this latest revelation in your previous conclusions... you've admitted as much...
